Southern California Advice

I am heading out to Southern California for the US Open next week and need some advice on what to do. I will be in San Diego with my sister and then we will be in LA for a day or two. Other than the usual stuff like Rodeo dr., Manns chinese theater, etc. What are some cool things to do in a short amount of time, especially in LA.

Most importantly what are some places to eat in LA and or San Diego that should not be missed.

Thanks in advance!

If you want a memorable experience:

Cut someone off in traffic and then wave your gun out the window while shouting racial epithets. You'll have "the time of your life".

Give us a little more direction.... your age range, what kind of budget are you looking at (for dining), and what types of things do you enjoy (outdoors, museums, arts, music). LA's a big place with lots to do.

In Los Angeles:

Eat at Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles. I like the one on Pico best, it's like being in Fred Sanford's neighborhood. Go there early before the lunch rush to get a seat.

Go to Venice Beach and walk along watching people.

Shop in Santee Alley.

Drive the length of Sunset Blvd, from downtown to Malibu. It's about 30 miles I think.

Get a book about rock and roll in LA and take a self driven tour of houses, crime sites, studios, clubs and bars where people like Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, Gun 'n" Roses, The Beach Boys, Jim Morrison, Phil Spector, etc., etc., etc, lived, worked and played.

Go to a Dodgers' game.

Check out the La Brea Tarpits downtown.

Go to a movie at the fancy Arclight Theater in Hollywood.

Go to Echo Park in the daytime and have lunch by the lake.

Take any of the main streets in town, whose names you are familiar with from movies and TV, and then drive through the residential areas, rich and poor, on parallel streets to see where the people live.

Have a hot dog at Pink's and a burger at In and Out.

Those are relatively inexpensive things I've enjoyed doing in LA to get the flavor of the city.

Some good suggestions on this previous inquiry I posted a while back.

We ended up spending the day in Santa Monica. Stayed at the Georgian (an Ocean Avenue, across from the beach). We were planning to visit the Getty, then spend the afternoon/evening in Santa Monica but we were tired from an early flight so decided to just stay in SM.

We did have one "mission", and that was to have a meal at Father's Office. We decided to walk the 1.8 miles or so from the hotel and "accidentally" ended up exploring some residential areas. The architecture and gardens were fantastic. (The Office burger was pretty damn good, too.)

If you really want to "see" LA, then this probably isn't how you want to spend your short time there. But we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Pack a light sweater and/or light jacket.

I know it may seem strange since it is hot as balls in Austin right now, but SoCal can get downright brisk in the evening during the summer months.

Ditto Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles.

Every time I've eaten breakfast there (Hollywood Location), we've won the MNC in football!

With a belly full of fried chicken and waffles, next stop should be the Getty Museum. You can thank me later.

I too stayed at the Georgian in Santa Monica back in March. Great view of the Pacific from the front porch of the hotel, and it is probably around 200 yards from the famed Santa Monica pier. At the beginning of the pier is a nice restaurant called the Lobster. The Link

We also traveled down to Venice 9only about 2 miles from Santa Monica) and ate at a great little restaurant called Joe's. The Link

Highly recommend the Getty and making the drive along the Pacific Coast Highway out to Malibu. It's really hard to watch the road and the scenery as well. Saw some dolphins about 100 yards offshore.

The only downside in LA is the f'n traffic. Worst I've ever been in, and I've lived in both Austin and Houston for over 20 years. Driving between San Diego and LA is a major league bitchfest.

San Diego, the only things I can recommend there are the Hotel Del Coronado and the Zoo.
