I have September 25th to October 20th off from my school in Bangkok. I plan to visit Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam but there isn't really anything specific I have in mind (other than Angkor Wat). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I second the Lonely planet recommendation. Their Vietnam book is what gave them their reputation. Also check outThe Link
Just skim the book and website and start narrowing down your options.

Laos is very cool- extremely relaxing, peaceful, and safe. Start in Loangprabang and work your way down to Vientiene or vice versa- that's the best part of the country I think. There are plenty of things to do in the southern part but it's not as scenic and the humidity is worse.

There are other things to do in Cambodia than Angkor Wat, but none of it worth sacrificing better stuff in other countries. I spent 2 days there and got more than my fill of temples. Never had the urge to see Phnom Penh.

Since you have enough time, I'd just travel the length of Vietnam, from Saigon to Hanoi. There is so much cool stuff to do and see along the way. And be wary of Lonely Planet's prices for transportation- some are pretty dated. Sometimes a flight is just a bit more expensive than a train ticket for a sleeper.

No interest in seeing China? Chiang Mai?

Thanks for the replies, Lonely Planet Thailand has been great, I'll definitely be picking their books up soon.

Ryskey- I've already been to Chiang Mai though I'll probably head back up at some point. I think I'll hit China and Korea up this spring when school lets out again.
