South Padre Island

Has anyone been there this year yet? I was wondering how the water looks. I know I've gone during rainy summers and the water is full of sediment. I'm hoping since it's been a dry summer the water will look a little nicer.

Also, has anyone ever gone out 183 to 80, and so on? How was that drive vs. the main (bigger) highways?

One more thing. Does anyone know of good places to go snorkeling in the area? I've been to Padre many times and I know it's not usually a snorkeling destination, but I thought there may be something close by. Maybe more towards Mexico.

I was there last week and the water was nice and clean.

There is fairly good snorkeling around the jetties from time to time, but be careful of the urchins...

It takes a couple days of no wind or 2-3 mph winds out of the SE for clear water. The Texas' coastal waters are shallow with no reef. So, we have sand bars where the sand is constantly being churned by wind and wave giving us brownish murky water.

Well I wasn't expecting white sand beaches, but I know sometimes when there's been lots of run off the water is a little cloudier than usual.
