South Carolina

Maybe they'll finally win a title since they don't have to play Texas for it.

I'm torn because I fell for UCLA and they did send La Cucaracha home but I'm also smitten with this Jackie Bradley Jr. guy from usc. I love the way he plays ball and all the clutch hits. Not sure I can root for an se-cuck team though so I'll just sit back and enjoy the baseball. West Coast versus East. Not thinking the East has much of a chance.

Did you hear the Gamecocks pitcher Roth (who pitched the CG to beat Clemson the first time) in his post-game interview tell the story about the little South Carolina fan who finally succumbed to cancer last week?

That's why the South Carolina players have the "BT" initials on their caps. That's enough to make me root for the Gamecocks.

I was hearing/reading on Saturday that SC had not played for a NC since 2002, and I reminded my wife that we remember that game - it's when we really got hooked on Texas baseball (we were outside in sweltering heat cleaning out crepe myrtles and watching/listening on a small b/w portable TV).

We were happy to have won that one, but I think, reading the paper article, that it's time to let SC win theirs.

God bless the Gamecocks.

I like both teams in the final but making the choice I am rooting for the Gamecocks. They are one of those teams who have been in contention for years, but never grabbed the crown. (Twice we beat them, no complaints there.) I hope they finally get it this year.

That was an impressive win last night, although there were a lot of strange bounces of the ball in the game. It was an impressive Gamecock pitching performance, that much can be said. I was surprised, but SC has been surprising all the way through. Maybe it is their year.
They better win it tonight, because that rubber armed pitcher for UCLA will go on Wednesday, and I don't think he will lose.

I would have never thought that a) any eastern team could beat any western team, and, especially, b) any eastern team could outpitch any western team. I stand corrected.

Glad they finally won it, as I hoped for above. Is that South Carolina's first national championship in any of the major team sports? I think it is.

Yes, according to the announcers last night, the Gamecocks only other NC was in women's track. This was a big addition to their trophy case.
South Carolina really played well, especially with their backs to the wall. They deserved it, although they were helped by UCLA's stupidity in several instances. First they lose their second baseman for the entire CWS in a dogpile accident, then the first baseman who was moved over from third base due to the dogpile screwup boots the ball allowing the tieing run to score, goes into the dugout and smashes his hand on the bench, forcing the Bruins to reshuffle the lineup again.
Woulda coulda shoulda, but it was easy to visualize UCLA winning last night 1-0, then winning tonight behind their ace.
But Carolina pitched really well throughout, and they deserved the title, at least until one of their players started blabbing about how great the SEC was.
Orel Hershiser was really getting into the game in extra innings. He analyzed every pitch, and I enjoyed his commentary. Usually they sit up there and talk about how its done in the major leagues, which gets old quick.
It's second guessing, but I did think UCLA would walk at least one batter there at the end, if not two to load the bases when the Gamecocks got the runner to third with only one out. All they needed was a sacrifice, might as well attempt to set up the double play to get out of the inning intact.

When the count was 2-0, I thought UCLA was going to walk the the bases loaded instead of giving that lefty a meaty pitch to hit.

Players who punch things and break their hands usually get the nickname Wally (for Wally Pip).

Congrats to the Cocks. Glad they didn't win in 2002, but happy for them this year. Well deserved!

Hook'em!!!
