South Beach Hotels

I have a conference in Miami in April. Never been, and would like to make it a little bit of a vacation. However, reasonably priced would be ideal (like under $250). I like boutique hotels rather than monstrosities. I like to be close to things, but I'm not a huge clubber/partier so it's not absolutely necessary.

any recs?

If clubs & partying ins't your thing, you might consider going to Coconut Grove or out to Ft Lauderdale. Much better hotel values. Topshelf Boutique hotels in South Beach will likely be $200-400. There are lots of no frills boutique hotels for ~$100 depending on time of year.

happy, where did you book it? i just tried to book thru the standard website, but they said there is no availability in april 2008. how is that possible?

I live in coconut grove. Stay at The Mutiny. If you are downtown stay at the JW Marriott, or Intercontinental.
If you are on the beach... have fun. Its overpriced, and under maintained.

Lnghrnfan knows of what he speaks.

Coconut Grove to SoBe is about a 20 minute drive if things go well; 30 on average (& depending on the time of day).

South Beach is a nice place to visit, but after one good 5 hour stretch on a good Saturday night when the temps are cool, you've about seen all there ever is to see.

TT I booked on that same site, just not so far in advance. They may not be setup online for April yet. Give them a call.

For the record, I agree with all the criticisms of SB above. The standard has all of the positives, but being just 5 minutes away gets rid of all the negatives. And if you want the negatives they have a free shuttle to and from the Raleigh every 30 mins. It's less crowded, more relaxed, no bridge and tunnel types wandering through your reality. Pool's topless, filled with with actress/model types. Freaking awesome scene, and I was there Monday through Thursday, and 150 a night for the small room, 175 for a medium. I was in room 89 overlooking the pool and the bay Perfect.

so weird. i called the Standard three times and asked for reservations. Once, I got disconnected. The next two times I got an answering machine. I left a message one. their website still shows that they are booked for the month of april

That sucks man. It was truly one of the finest "work" lodging experiences of my life. And that price is incredible. My boss thought I was staying at the Intercontinental downtown, and he gave me **** for staying in South Beach (even though it's on an island) until he saw the bill.
