Sotonye (Soso) Jamabo of Plano West has set an OV to us in the Jan 23rd weekend, following an OV to aggy this weekend. UCLA is generally said to lead for Soso with ND right behind them, but hard-recruiting from Texas and aggy was supposed to happen in the end, and it is happening just as expected! His rankings:

#17 on rivals (#3 RB recruit in the nation)
#18 on scout.com (#1 RB recruit in the nation)
#28 on ESPN as an ATH (#4 ATH in the nation)
#70 on 247sports
Which leads to a #27 on 247's industry average rating.

The ratings of Soso are a bit weird because nobody is sure which position to put him at. RB probably, but he is a super-good tall athlete (6-2, around 210) with a smooth running style and effortless play-making, which I think is also a reason why some say he is not a punishing type RB. In my opinion, an RB who has vision, a smooth running style and lateral athleticism does not need to be a punishing back to be a play-maker and game-changer. Despite some people arguing (and the 247 rating indicating just the same) that Chris Warren or Nick Brossette will be better pure RBs, I would first pick Soso because we need play-makers. He has great hands as a receiver too. Soso has the best upside among any recruit that we are in on.

Here are his 2014 highlights -The Link
You decide for yourselves. Damn, he is smooth as a player!

4-stars Chris Warren (down to mainly us and Washington with us leading) or Nick Brossette (LSU commit with a 50-50 chance to flip to us) may be better every-down running backs and the size at which Soso may play later also remains a bit uncertain, but landing a 5-star playmaker like Soso will be huge!

Recruiting of Soso has been unusually quiet which may also be because Texas and A&M may have wanted to not scare away other RB recruits, when neither is sure if Soso can be the primary RB. Soso himself may have known it and have kept things extremely close to the vest for anybody to know what he is thinking. There have been cases when I saw recruiting sites taking down posts about any contacts with Soso from Texas. Not sure who asked them to. But now that we are down to the last 2 weeks of visits, recruiting of Soso Jamabo is about to hit the news wires. Keep your fingers crossed. We have as much a chance on him as does UCLA, ND or aggy, if not better.

After 90 seconds watching a six minute film I am on board. He is the personification of 'smooth.' His acceleration through the hole is very impressive also, as is his vision to avoid direct hits and pick up extra yardage.

His overall speed seems very good, I never saw him caught from behind, and his elusiveness seems excellent--especially for someone of his stature.

I want him at Texas!!

The dude's name reminds me of a little trinket stall I had seen in a mall once - "Jamaica me crazy".

"Soso, jamaboi! Jamaica me want you at Texas!" (as caryhorn can say!)

I know his parents and I think Texas may have a step on everyone else because they want to be able to go see him play.

That is an impressive video. But I won't go apeshit over a video without knowing more about the guy. Some examples of the types of concerns I have:

(1) Highlight videos can be very misleading. Is he fumble prone? Does he commit stupid penalties? I'll leave it to Charlie and staff to assess Soso based on his full body of work.

(2) I hate when video editors slow film down just as cuts are made. It makes cuts look smoother than they really are. I'm sure Charlie and staff will be reviewing real game film, not this edited version.

(3) Soso seems to have a horrible habit of going into a high-step at the 5 yard line, even when defendants are hot on his tail. Is he being lazy, figuring he doesn't need to run any more? Or is he being cocky, taunting the defender? Charlie and staff can easily get rid of the habit, but they should be concerned about what it may say anything his character. I'm not saying he has bad character, just that it should be explored thoroughly.

^^^ Yes, I also noticed the high-stepping thing, but I haven't seen any character issues mentioned anywhere. One knock on him that I saw casual fans discuss on other sites (mostly based on one playoff game that they all seem to have seen) is that he does not like contact much. Heck, he is capable of avoiding contact in many cases, which may be why! I think it is fine for certain type of players who are good enough to avoid contact to try that and take it to the house at the first half-chance they get. That is probably the kind he is. Again, maybe not your every-down RB but a weapon in all kinds of ways. Need to get him. It looks like there isn't much chance that we will miss out on both Chris Warren and Nick Brossette (and don't forget that we already have two RBs committed in Tristan Houston and Kirk Johnson). There may be some coaching, style adjustments and careful-play-calling needed in the case of Soso, but play-makers like him should be there in a team. We should go all out to get him.

Highlight videos can be misleading for a number of reasons, including the level of competition. Jamabo, however, is playing in one of the toughest districts in Texas. It is useful to know if he has the dropsies or butter fingers, but he has put up some wicked stats against some great competition.

Soso's elusivitaciousness was very impressive. Sure makes a lot of people miss and then outruns them. I had expected more of a contact guy based on his size but if you can't catch him, you can't tackle him. I think he would look good in burnt orange.

I like his style. Similar to VY, he doesn't appear fast and doesn't use many "sharp" cuts but no one seems to be able to lay a good lick on him.

VY and Dickerson were what came to my mind also. But Soso is a little lighter than those guys in weight, I think.

Well, it turns out that Soso did not go on that OV to aggy today. The aggy site is confirming it, and they say there is no plan to reschedule it either. So, scratch aggy from his list. Now it looks like he only has a visit to us next week on the schedule before announcing his choice, which now must come from UCLA, ND or us. I hope he doesn't cancel on us also.

He had a short interview with one of the sites a day or two ago when he said he will shut it down after his visit to Texas if he feels he knows what he wants to do by then, or may take another visit if not. That sounds kinda good for us, if we are the ones getting in his ear for the last time. Maybe we have a chance to land this guy after all.

Really, this is among the quietest recruiting of a 5-star I have ever seen.

Meanwhile RB Brossette has been tweeting left and right with hookems, all excited during his ongoing OV today.

I agree with the comparison to Jamaal Charles. That guy is a scorer, and I don't mean from the goal line. Does look like an ACL tear waiting to happen. Also, seems to cut to the right 95% of the time. Hope we get him.

Our coaches are visiting Soso today. Lots of positive chatter that we may have quietly become the leader for him. Keep your fingers crossed....

This is a kid who motions to the edge as OLBs **** themselves. He is made to score from the flat or on a quick pitch. So smooth.

Hmmm... It seems Jamabo is already at Austin on an OV. he started the OV earlier because he has a basketball banquet at his school on Saturday. Gosh, none of our recruiting reporters have a clue what is going on in Charlie's world of recruiting. Impressive leak-control at Belmont, on what they are up to.

^^^ lol. No, that was from a Gerry Hamilton (ESPN) tweet. Of course, one needs to clik on his tweets carefully... These days it seems you could end up at a porn site, which happened to many folks yesterday. Poor guy, Gerry. He corrected the link quickly but it was too late!

By the way, don't forget that Soso Jamabo, Kyler Murray and Demarkus Lodge are pretty tight together, and probably the closest buddy-trio in the national top-50 too, though they never said they would go to one place.

Damn. If something really is cooking, it will be an outstanding meal. On the other hand, maybe Charlie is just playing with fire in the kitchen too.

Early indication of an excited Soso. The Link

"Would look better on me.. @TheKylerMurray" (with a picture of a burnt orange #1 jersey).

A commitment to follow? Would be great to go 1-1 against UCLA today.

Damn, I want this dude to commit. Like NOW.

He is actually the right domino that needs to fall for all this heavy-smoke stuff to happen. He just needs to commit. Come on my boy, Soso, we need you to do something. Come one... Now.

So, last night the recruiting world went crazy for an hour as Soso posted at his twitter this at 10 pm -The Link
"Tune in to channel 8 @11 tonight if you want to see where Soso Jamabo will be attending college next year "

Channel 8 in Dallas has a weekly highschool show at 11 pm, and Soso's schools basketball game was to be on (so it may have been filmed earlier).

One hour of serious frenzy, people staying up to watch what the deal was, and getting excited (but guys like Jason Higdon and Bob Burton knew what was up and sent out alerts too).

He later tweeted the vine clip of his comments at the show. Here it is.The Link

Watch it and you will know exactly where he is signing on NSD.

His basketball teammates and the TV channel were all in on it, and knew it too.
