As a self-described film snob I have no idea why I waited so long to finally watch this masterpiece. Wait. I do know why I waited so long. It ripped my ******* heart out & stomped it into a million shattered pieces.

I'd always thought Streep's work in The Deer Hunter and Out of Africa was her best but what she did in SC was De Niro in Raging Bull-esque. You don't see any hint of an actor performing, you just feel the true character.

**Spoiler (I guess, for a quarter century old + movie)**

I don't have kids--never will have them--but that scene was the most brutal 90 seconds of film I've ever seen.

I made the mistake of seeing that film when I was 8 months pregnant, when it first came out. Great film, I just have never been able to bring myself to watch it again. Streep is amazing.

I have not seen it, but i know of it of course. When it came out in 1982, I was a wee lad and the subject matter obviously wasn't all that appealing.

Now as a Dad, i bet it would just kill me. OK, I haven't had a good cry in a while; Netflix is calling.

The entire cast was fantastic. It's strange to think this was Kevin Klines first film role (he was an accomplished stage actor at the time).
The transition from stage to film can be difficult since you have to project so much further on stage and this role could have so easily gone way over the top even for an experienced film actor who was accustomed to reining it in for the camera. Really incredible job all around.

There was a TV mini-series in, I think, late 1973 called QB VII. I've forgotten the significance of the name, but it was an outstanding "docu-drama", based on characterizations of WW II. It starred (and was the first time I had seen either of them) Meryl Streep and Anthony Hopkins.

They both gave sensational performances, especially Hopkins, who was riveting in his portrayal of a Josef Mengele-type Nazi doctor.

IMO, they are the best actor/actress around.

QB VII refers to Queen's Bench # 7...the name of the particular court that was assigned the libel case. In real life, Leon Uris, author of Exodus, had been sued in that very court for libel...that inspired him to pen QB VII.

This is a great movie -only seen it once at the theatre in 1982. IMO it was Streep's best movie performance ever. I have not seen the movie since it was released as it was so intensely brutal and incredibly sad.

Mea culpa.

A couple of posts up from here, I mentioned QB VII and said that it starred Meryl Streep and Anthony Hopkins. Well, I hadn't even THOUGHT about QB VII in decades, so I googled it and there was no mention of Streep.

Apparently, QB VII and The Holocaust (which DID star Streep) did a memory merge in my mind and combined the stories and players into one movie.

Sorry about that. I guess they're right: when you get old, memory is the second thing to go. I've already forgotten what the first was.
