this looks bad.

Cable customers in Austin, Texas, don’t have access to their hometown University of Texas’ Longhorn Network.

But starting next fall, those Texas subscribers will be able to see plenty of the Longhorns’ bitter rival through hours of University of Oklahoma-branded programming, thanks to a deal that’s close to being signed with Fox Sports.

According to a report in the Sports Business Journal, the University of Oklahoma and Fox Sports are working to finalize an agreement that would give the Sooners their own brand sports television network.

It's similarly structured to the Longhorn Network in that it will feature OU's third-tier TV rights, including at least one live football game, several men’s and women’s basketball games and Olympic sports. Where it's not similar is in the 24-hour broadcast and of course in the total dollars (which have yet to be disclosed) or expected length of the deal.

The obvious major advantage between the two bitter rivals' networks is that Oklahoma's will be immediately available via Fox Sports regional networks cable distribution where as the Texas Network is still available in a very small number of homes (comparatively speaking) and reportedly no closer to making a deal to change that fact.

OU’s deal with Fox alleviates the pressure that comes with starting a new network from scratch, which would entail everything from building out studios and hiring talent to negotiating with cable and satellite carriers and setting up a sales staff. One of the Sooners’ primary objectives in striking a deal with Fox was to launch their branded content on a partner that offered complete distribution from day one, sources said.

I'll leave it up to our resident expert, Redhawk, to expound more on the details of the report but my uneducated brain tells me this looks to be a pretty good deal overall for OU.

How is a Fox Sports regional network (I'm assuming it's one of the pay tier ones like soccer or FS-Atlantic or FS-Arizona) any different than a tier with ESPN channels?

It's just a matter of the cable/satellite provider picking it up. Unless the OU one is that much cheaper than LHN, I'm not sure why that would be such a big difference.

GG is right. ou shows on Fox Sports is different from a separate network. However, if it will get ESPN and IMG to work out something wtih Time Warner that will be a good thing.

IMG is the "agent" involved and part of their pay is based on the revenue generated by ESPN so they have an interest in not letting ESPN lower the price.

Fine points aside, to the average viewer it's gonna appear that OU can get its' "network" on cable when UT can't. The clips may not make nearly as much off of their "network", but the fact it's gonna be available to just about any viewer with a cable box BEFORE the LHN makes it a big win for OU.

So 3 hours of "OU stuff" in off-peak hours on weekdays somehow equals a network? Or clips of Billy Sims in the 1 am timeslot?

Sounds like they're reaching if they think it'll be considered an actual "network." FSW shows college football games already, so getting an OU one on there doesn't mean it's some great exclusive deal. If anything, they'd probably just give some money back to C-USA and fill one of their spots with OU.

I'm guessing this is about a $5 million/year type of deal. It's nowhere near as all-encompassing as LHN, but they're correct about getting the shows on TV quicker. LHN will eventually get picked up a bit more, and once the naysayers get a taste of "All Access," they'll lighten up a bit.

Comcast just signed a new deal with Disney. I wonder if Comcast will be able to carry the Longhorn network now

Uh.. No they won't have a network first but they will have pieces for programing that will be available to normal Joe's out there. I personally don't like Fox SW and think it stinks. The LHN has the Potential of being a national network instead of a limited regional one, but that is still up to negotiations. If things don't turn around in the next year or so with negotiations... it might not be good.

The Texas following is huge... kind of the the Cowboys being americas team. I think the thought might be that if denied long enough.. maybe the media giants will bend. Honestly I doubt it but I would love to see it change.

I think this OU network is really good news for Texas and the Big 12.

Good news for Texas because it means carriage of the LHN is coming soon.

Good news for the B12 because there are going to be schools out there who will be ready to join the B12 in order to cash in on Tier 3 revenue of their own.
