I was looking at purchasing one of these.. the FS-550 or the S-360. Anyways, i was just curious as to anyone's experience with them as far as reliability.
My Vaio lasted 1.5 yrs. Stopped recharging, screen went on teh fritz, got too hot, then wouldn't turn on at all. It is now a paperweight and will remain a lasting reminder for me to never consider buying a Vaio laptop again. Sony customer service and repair is second to EVERYONE!!
My brother has a VGN-A190; had it for about 8 months or so up to this point. Actually used their customer service and it wasn't bad at all. They sent a box for him to ship the laptop to them in and paid for the shipping there and back. He mailed it off and got it back within 3 days. And the damage was something that we sort of did when we were playing around doing some upgrades on it. It seems like the customer service has always been good when he calls to ask questions about certain things. He did a few other upgrades on it needed part numbers and the like and was able to get the answers.
Laptop threads come and go. The consensus is usually to buy a Thinkpad if money is no object. If you are on a budget, Toshiba is a good option. Dell is viable as well if you wait for the right deal. Sony is ok, but not as much bang for the buck as Toshiba, and not as dependable as IBM.
I think with most companies, you need to purchase one of their best products or you are always going to have problems. You may spend a good amount more, but at least the thing will last and not give you the problems lower models will. I have a Dell laptop and really like it, but it would be hard to convince me to buy a lesser model. My brother bought the Vaio VGN-A190 and only considered one other Sony laptop.
That being said, there seems to be sort of a laptop boom recently. It seems like prices have actually been rising lately. If I was looking at buying a laptop right now and could get by without one for a year or so, I think I would wait to buy one.
