Sometimes When You Don't Plan Anything

Sometimes when you don't plan anything, everything falls into place on its own. This is one of those rare times!

I did not start out the school year intending to retire. I am at years + age = 80, but did yet not feel ready to turn in my chalk holder. Hubby runs the calcualtions back in Feb and realizes that the difference between my salary and what I would draw from TRS is about $20K. I start to think about it. Huge budget cuts and teacher cuts really make me wonder whether I want to weather one more educational storm. Uh...no...time to hang it up. They say when you know, you know. They were right.

Later in March a friend sends me a link to a posting in Craigslist for a bio and anat/physio teacher at the Catholic high school in Katy. I decide to put together a resume and throw it into cyberspace. Don't hear from them for about 3 weeks or so, and have figured it was either bogus or they filled it.

Then, last week Thursday they call and ask if I would like to interview. Monday I interview, and Thursday this week they invite me to join their faculty!

The school is just over 300 students, with an average class size of 15. They are on block scheduling, so that means I have 90 minute classes.

But the best part is that between my TRS money and the salary they are offering, I make about $20K more than I would just staying in public education.

We have been through so many oil busts and years of frozen teacher salaries, that it is kind of nice to be in the right place at the right time for once! I am looking forward to next year already! Here's hoping my karma rubs off on someone else who needs it!

Very cool. Sometimes when we just set an intention and then let it go, things start happening in the background and amazing results seem to come from nowhere. I've had this happen so many times, and I just have to laugh when these little 'miracles' show up again and again. It's so cool.

Most of us tend to over-think and over-plan and over-analyze ... usually we just need to move in the direction of what we really want, and the details start to work themselves out. I'm reminded of Thoreau's great line:

"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."

You're in the flow. Go with it.

Lostman, that's great! I am so happy for you.

The best part is that you will continue to make a difference in young lives. Bless you!

Congratulations. I just retired a week ago at rule of 80 with ERS and I'm waiting for another door to open somewhere. I hope mine is as profitable as yours.

"I just retired a week ago at rule of 80 with ERS and I'm waiting for another door to open"

I did that 6 years ago. Turned out to be a revolving door for me.

what you went back to work at the same place you worked when you retired?

Btw, anybody on here know the difference between ERS and TRS?

My brother works for ERS, regular state employee in Austin, his retirement is going to be based on the average of his last 3 years of salary, compared to TRS, which for me is based on my average of my last 5 years of salary.

His health insurance is better, but I don't know but can guess that his retired health insurance will be better.

The obvious solution is to lobby the legislature to make them exactly equal in terms of benefits.

Other choice is to become a state employee, teach in a state prison. I actually like that idea.

Shoot... they pay better in prison.

Congrats Lostman! Just remember... private school parents are a totally different animal...

I've got a long way to go... since I'm only at 40. It's been a rough day for me, too. One of my students showed up to first period drunk off his *** and with a bottle that had purple koolaide and vodka in it. I went to go donate blood 2nd period and had to wait b/c my blood pressure was too high- lol. Yay school... I'm SOOOO ready for summer!

Thanks! I am looking forward to the change. Did elementary for 13 years, middle school for 13 years, and admin for 2 years. It has always been in my career plan to move to high school, and also to teach in a Catholic school. I was raised in Catholic schools 1-12, and do want to give back there also.

It has also been in my plans to teach AP Bio and they plan to add that in a couple years, so I will finish my teaching career in about another 10 years hopefully teaching Anat/Physio and AP Bio.

Unless it has changed, ERS insurance was paid for the retiree. As a TRS retiree, I pay over $400 a month for mine. I'm sure all of this will change with the health care reform.

Wow! quite a difference. I really think they should make the bennies the same for everybody. I do understand the population is different for TRS, with more women, who live longer, but $400 compared to 0?

sounds like you need a part-time job to pay the insurance.
