Something to think about when building a house

Vol Horn 4 Life

Good Bye To All The Rest!
I suggest that high ceilings are overrated. I have now been awake since 4:15 this morning listening to our fire alarm go on and off because one of them has a low battery.

Our main ceiling throughout is 14ft and the bedrooms are 12ft. Now I have to go buy a damned $250.00 step ladder to replace a $2.00 battery.

For other projects I have tried the normal extended ladders that you lean against the walls, but that limits your range of work not to mention that they seem pretty unstable.

Oh well, I guess I'll need one anyway when the recessed lights start going out.

Lets also not forget the freaking $250.00 per month electric bill.

nick, it would have been funny if the model home pic did not come up for you leaving the Rose Bowl pic to stand alone. That would be a hell of a family room and big family and hey, I could say I have been to your house.

For recessed lights, get the pole grabber thingy that restaurants use. This way you don't have to put out the ladder. Does not help you with the batteries in detector but that is just a once a year thing. It is an extendable pole w/ grabbers. Works like a charm to dust up high too.

I got ya beat. We have 20 ft cathedrals in our family room with a ceiling fan in the middle. A few months ago my 1 year old let go of his balloon which quickly wrapped itself around the ceiling fan. Forunately it didn't get into the mote and the fan is still useable. It just looks strange to have this falcid red balloon hanging from the ceiling.

I will attest to the beauty of the pole. My ceilings are only in the 11' range at the highest, but I have changed a jillion indoor floods with it. I don't have the grabber type, just a suction cup.

Nick, for a moment I thought you were coming out of the closet or self worshiping yourself. Whew. The suction cup ones work great too. But if you want to use it to dust and stuff, you have to tape the duster or dust rag to the tip but that is easy to do.

I like tall cielings -- ours are 12ft and 10ft. But I don't think that is what you are saying is wasted space. I do think that family rooms that extend upward to the second story cieling is wasted space -- there could be another room there.

I can't believe the time and money spent on light bulbs at my house. If I had to drag the ladder out to do it, I would hate them as much as I hate my swimming pool.

Sometimes I get frustrated with the lack of space in my 50s ranch home, but it's times like this that I love it - 10' ceilings throughout so lights are easy to replace, and a pier foundation with vented space underneath to help keep it cool in the summer.

Put some duct tape underneath the rim of the bowl and pour some muriatic acid down the overflow pipe in the tank.

All toilets now are low flow and will tend to get stopped up, but your jets are probably clogged with lime. You can also just grind them out with a small piece of wood.

Mexico, baby, Mexico. We grabbed a couple of full size crappers and a case of freon last spring break and are probably going to do it again next week!! Leave that low-flow stuff for the Canadians.

Good toilets? Get a Toto. I have their Drake model and it will suck down a small child plus all his/her toys. I'm not kidding. My Toto 1.6 gallon has a more powerful flush than any 5 gallon flusher I've ever had. You'll be amazed.

Our smoke alarms are wired into the electrical system of the house -- so, no need to worry about batteries. Of course, if the power goes out before a fire ... crackle, crackle.
