Somebody help me understand this scrimmage

We're playing a division II school. I know it's "just a scrimmage", but isn't this going to be substantially worse for us than just practicing during that evening instead? I mean, a squad of D1A walkons ought to be able to handle most D2 schools. Is Saint Edwards a particularly strong D2 program? If they are a weak D2 team we almost might as well be playing high schoolers.

Stat, it's an exhibition designed to get the home team some practice time against someone other than themselves and fans a chance to see the home team in action before the season starts. Kinda helps to work out some kinks by playing others not as familiar with you and vice versa. More stuff for the coaches to work with the team on before the season starts.

it's free. you should come by and watch if you have the chance.

In the past we've played against some international teams and against some teams made up of semi-professional former US college players. Not sure why we don't see as many international teams, but it may have to do with the up and down quality of those teams or perhaps even the economy. I think the move away from the teams of former college players has to do with how those teams are organized and coached. They often seemed just thrown together and didn't really play like a team, whereas a team like St. Ed's (although it may be composed of lower quality players) will actually attempt to run an organized offense and defense. Also when you played these teams of former college players you never knew much in advance which players they would actually send to play against you.

I think, I wouldn't bet on it, that Div 1 can only play exhibitions against lower division teams, hence the St. Eds, Trinitys, etc. They have moved away from the combo teams of former college players and pros.

Enjoy the exhibition, we got Stanford on the horizon.

And I don't see anyone playing the travelling clubs with former Division one athletes on them anymore. i suspect, as alluded to earlier, the economy has knocked those organizations on their butts.
