I didn't say anything because I didn't want to jinx it and wasn't confident about it, but I really did think this was a good matchup for our defense. We've struggled with teams that have dynamic offenses with multiple big-play receivers that play with tempo. Iowa State doesn't have those things, and I think it helped us to be able to focus more on the run (we played a four-man front much of the game) and settle into our assignments better. Blitzes were timed better than they have been all year long, which may just be guys like BJ starting to have a better feel for the game.
The defense wasn't gassed down the stretch like they have been at times in other games, and they were able to keep constant pressure on Purdy. Roach being back is probably helping there, but also we're starting to see more young guys in, which is encouraging. Seeing Osai make a play at the end was fantastic. I think Orlando may be figuring out that he's got to send the heat for this defense to play well. With better depth developing, maybe that's the mode for the rest of the season.
Shane looked solid - still doesn't have a good feel for pressure and rolled right into a sack that ended a drive, but he made good decisions with the ball, threw well and did what he needed to do. Having an o-line that holds the pocket seems to help in that regard!
Best game by the o-line to date. We got much more consistent movement in the run game, and there were times when you could really see us re-establish the LOS 3-4 yards downfield. After the initial drive or two when Iowa State was getting good pressure with four rushers, I thought we adjusted well. Again... it's a good matchup. Iowa State's a speed defense that doesn't look like it has a whole lot of size up front, and I thought at times we just manhandled them.
I think Young's season needs to be over now. For a guy who is supposedly a ball-control, short-yardage guy, he seems to be the only one of our backs that's putting it on the ground. Can't have any more of that.
To Breckyn Hager: Vince McMahon on Line 1 for you.
Gary Johnson brought it. We handled Purdy's scrambling better than we've handled a mobile QB all year long. Granted, Purdy wasn't very decisive, and clearly got rattled as the game went on. Looked like GJ was spying him a lot, and it seemed like every time he left the pocket, he got a dose of 33.
I haven't watched KU much this year so interesting to see what they do. It seems like every time I turn on one of their games, it's just in time to see one of their safeties make a horrible play and give up a long TD, so let's hope that keeps going. Clearly they can score against an awful defense, so let's try not to be awful on Friday, and we should be fine.
