Some Movie Recommendations:

Here are five flicks I discovered on NETFLIX that I found very enjoyable which were previously unknown to me:

"The Painted Veil," Naomi Watts and Edward Norton in a period piece set in British colonial times. Then factor in infidelity, loyalty, emerging Chinese nationalism and a cholera epidemic.

The Link

IMHO, this wide sweeping storyline is worthy of comparison to "Doctor Zhivago," "Lawrence of Arabia," "Reds" or any of Rudyard Kipling. So, if you've never yet kipled (to reference a very old joke} and would fancy a good, epic movie......take a chance.

"The Poker House," young Jennifer Lawrence in a coming of age movie that's more lighthearted than was "Precious" and not unlike "Winter's Bone," but it still delivers its own unique social punch.

The Link

"The Heat," I saw the preview for this one at the local movie house but let it pass. During home rental, we couldn't stop laughing at Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. A better than expected storyline for a buddy flick. Lots and lots of F bombs but IMO very, very, very funny.

The Link

"About Cherry," about a troubled teen involved in porn in San Francisco. James Franco and Heather Graham have supporting roles. If you enjoyed "Boogie Nights," you'd probably like this one too.

The Link

"Jungle Fever," Spike Lee's film about an interracial affair. Wesley Snipes, Annabella Sciorra, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Samuel L. Jackson, John Turturro, Anthony Quinn, Halle Berry in a good film that I missed seeing on the big silver screen.

The Link

Recommendable current movies I've seen include "Captain Phillips" and "Thor: The Dark World."

Stay away from "Captain Phillips" if hand held camera movie making makes you ill and from "Thor" if you don't dig hunky super heroes.

Try "The Counselor," it's decent if you'd like a very verbose Cormac McCarthy screenplay.

Thanks for the recommendations. Here are some movies on TV that I thought were interesting.

A couple of movies about culture clash:
1. Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (inner city meets Japanese philosophy)
2. A Box of Moonlight (OCD engineer meets trailer trash)

Two strange movies:
1. Wristcutters, a Love Story
2. Everything is Illuminated (the trailer will spoil the movie)

Two English language movies set in South America:
1. The City of Your Final Destination (Uruguay)
2. The Dancer Upstairs (Peru)

Thanks for the recs. I think the DVD of The Painted Veil has been played on our TV, but I don't know how much of it I saw. (My wife may have put it on when I was at a baseball game or something.) From the trailers I didn't develop any interest in seeing it.

I'll follow up with a rec or two of my own.
