Solar heating and electricity anyone have it?

I have been sort of thinking about the potential of installing some solar panels on my house. The design of my roofline is sort of off in that it has a double peak. This would allow me to have the installation be effective but not show to the street.

The design woudl even allow me to have two sets of cells one to take advantage of moring and afternoon direct sunlight.

Anyhow just wondered if anyone here was using solar. I figure it's probably got a pretty long term payoff point, however with the liklihood of conventional energy prices continuing to rise the breakeven might be getting sooner.

Plus I know for the photo cells City fo Austin gives a pretty sizable rebate. I looked at buying a house a few years ago that had solar water heating and looking at the guys gas bills, his were FAR lower than the other homes of comparable square footage. He raved about the system but the collection tank in the garage was pretty massive.

Anyhow anyone have any experience in this area?

I don't have it yet, but I will as soon as the city gobbles me up - they're about 100 feet away now.

If you haven't already, talk with Austin Energy about it. They can help you decide if it's right for your home. I'm sure you know this already, but there is a lot of information on their website.

Most people here in Austin aren't aware how good the solar rebate program is. The city essentially rebates about half of the cost of your system, which will save you money as long as you live there. It's pretty smart, too. The city is offsetting its need to build a new power plant by distributing the power generation to rooftops across the city.
