I've been in Austin for 13 out of the last 16 years, I've eaten at alot of holes in the walls and fancy-shmancy places during my corporate travel across the US, Canada and Mexico...that's why my cholesteraol level is so high and why I am 30 pounds overweight. At any rate, here it goes, my picks for different eats for different needs/wants with per person price estimates, drinks not included:
Authentic Tex Mex: Amaya's Taco Village (51st & Cameron Road shopping mall) [$8]
Southwestern: Z-Tejas (West 6th & at Loop 360) [$17]
Carribean: Gilligans (downtown, 4th St.) [$25]
Chinese: Suzi's Grill (Andersen & Shoal Creek) [$17]
Italian: Mezzaluna (downtown), beware service sucks [$20]
French: Zoot Cafe (off of Lake Austin Blvd.) [$50]
All Around Breakfast: TIE: Between Magnolia's Cafe (Lake Austin Blvd.) [$9] and Kerbey Lane Cafe (3 locations in Austin) [$10]
Fancy Pizza: Mangia's [$18 for a large pie]
Diner: Jim's (183 and Burnet Rd.) [$8]
BBQ Casual: Rudy's (183 & Duval, and Loop 360 South) [$9]
BBQ Fancy: County Line [$20]
Seafood: PUNT!!! haven't found something to brag about yet, City Grill is over-priced and over-rated, Shoreline Grill is good but not good enough to keep me coming back consistently.
Steak, trendy atmo: Sullivan's (downtown) [$40], you'll need to look past the bar area which is prime hunting grounds for 40 - 55 year old women on the prowl. Wait staff is well trained in their craft.
Steak, manly atmo: ??? Steakhouse (29th & Guadalupe, the old Ruth Chris location) [$40]
Best Hotel: Four Seasons [$40]
Others That Are Too Good Pass Up (but don't fall neatly into a category):
-Castle Hills (5th near Lamar) [$17]
-Shady Grove (Barton SPrings Road) [$12]
Tourist Traps:
--------------
-El Arroyo (5th Street neer Mopac)
-Spaghetti Warehouse (downtown)
-????, its the place out west by the lake, the best sunset view for sure, but the food is god awful.
-Matt's El Rancho
Other random stuff:
-------------------
-Best Chicken sandwich ==> Trudy's (29th near Guadalupe) [$9]
-Best BBQ tacos ==> Ruby's (29th & Guadalupe) [$7]
-Best Chain: Outback Steakhouse [$15]
-Best Fried Chicken: Church's (Burnet Rd., 1.5 miles north of Koening/2222) [$5]
-Best Fries: TIE; Outback bacon & cheese fries and Hyde Park Bar & Grill battered fries
well, that's it for now, now I just made myself hungry, anyone know a good place to eat around here???
