So the mayor of Newark just knocked on my door...

He was helping open up the Austin headquarters today I think. On a side note, I highly recommend checking out Street Fight, a documentary about his first run against Sharpe James.

It's hard not to like Cory Booker, a Rhodes Scholar and Yale Law grad who as Councilman and Mayor of Newark lived lived for 6 years in what is essentially a domestic war-zone in the Brick Towers project, then moved to a different rental location in possibly the worst section of a city in all of the U.S.

He proposed policies were so feared by the criminal elements that the Bloods organized an elaborate plot to assassinate him in '06.

He's fighting corruption at obscene levels, extreme blight, a beaten down populace among other things, and idiotic attacks on him for "not being black enough."

There are a few areas of Newark that make getting the rest of the city in order worth it. It's going to take the efforts of hundreds of men like Booker.

Maybe when and if Newark gets turned around someone can do something about Jersey City. That place is possibly worse.

I hope you got his autograph. He's going to be a star on the national scene in the next decade.

Booker is a pretty remarkable person. Like KingBobo mentioned, check out Street Fight, it's a must see.

And yes, he was here to help Obama open his office, but more importantly, Booker was here to pound the pavement, because that is what he does best.

I get the feeling Cory Booker will have moved on to bigger and better things before Newark gets turned around.

I wish I would have known more about him prior to the visit... He did seem very personable, but I knew nothing about him and the candidates in general.

I read an article about Cory Booker recently (Realtor mag, I think). He does care about Newark and he will help get Newark straightened out. However, as mentioned above, he'll be gone before it does... the mayor of Newark is not knocking on doors in Austin, TX so he can stay mayor of Newark.

Our country needs more people to be dedicated to their community.

We did a month in Jersey City in some corporate housing...we never left the little 'community' so I didn't get a good feel for the town. But newark is a **** dump.

This guy caught some major flack after those kids were shot in the school play ground like 6, 7 months ago I think. He seemed pretty upset about it though. I got the feeling he actually gave a ****.

Then again, maybe I'm just comparing him to the mayor in The Wire, who really doesn't give a ****.
