So now, to make the finals ...

Texas needs a win today AND KSU beats Baylor. After that, just beat Kansas State on Saturday and we're in.

The question is, does it matter? We get the national seed with just one win, and probably even with none. So for postseason purposes winning Bricktown hardly matters. On the other hand, it would be a feather in our cap to win the tourney. Hence if we win today, I'm rooting against the Bears tonight.

It doesn't matter at all in terms of seeding. But as they say, practice doesn't make perfect ... perfect practice makes perfect. So I do think it is important for the future mindset and performance of this team to focus and execute and play to the best of their abilities.

Other than bragging rights, I don't care about actually winning this tournament, but I do want to see the team play well and do the things they're supposed to do. I'm totally fine with Augie pulling pitchers after a certain number of pitches or shuffling in defensive substitutes. This is the time to rest arms and do any kind of tweaking he may plan on doing before regionals. And even if that costs us a game or two, I don't care, as long as the players on field and at the plate are giving it their best.

The first tie breaker is head-to-head in the tourney. The second is seeding.

So...
1. Texas needs to beat KU and KSU.
2. Baylor must lose to KSU and KU.

Pretty sure Baylor only needs to lose to KSU. If that happens (and Texas wins twice), only two scenarios can result:

Texas 2-1
KSU 2-1
Baylor 1-2
KU 1-2
(Texas advances based on head-to-head)

OR:

Texas 2-1
Baylor 2-1
KSU 2-1
KU 0-3
(Texas advances on 3-way tie due to higher seed)

I also note that if Texas wins today and Baylor wins too, then miraculously the Bears will automatically advance no matter what results are on Saturday.

I hear Morris is going for KSU ... Go Wildcats.

And while this tournament "doesn't matter", I damn well hope we see players giving it their all. I agree with putting pitchers on counts, but having a Nat'l Seed on lock is not permission to tank for a weekend.

I expect to see us play very well today.

Morris is pitching for the Wildcats. Miller is pitching for Baylor. That is according to K-State's website.

"Kansas State continues play at the 2009 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship on Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Baylor at Bricktown Ballpark. The Wildcats will send Big 12 Pitcher of the Year A.J. Morris to mound, while Baylor will counter with left-hander Aaron Miller."

If Texas wins tomorrow then they are in the championship. The worst they can be if they win is tied with KSU (UT would have won head-to-head) or with KSU and Baylor (which the highest seed, Texas, would go) . That tie-breaker makes more sense that the football one.

Too bad that this is for a rather meaningless tournament, as I believe our National seeding is set no matter if we score another run in this thing, and the football deal was for ALL OF THE MARBLES.
