So my dogs killed a rabbit

I came home to my hose on full blast, a small lake (due to aformentioned hose being on for who nows how many hours), and a rabbit carcass on my patio. Not really sure how it got in in the first place since my fence is brand new and there are no ground level gaps, but whatever. The hose was on because they apparently chased it behind the hose reel and turned the faucet on. Maybe they just wanted to wash their paws, who knows. I think my heeler was the actual killer, since she had the most guilty look on her face :
Do rabbits have noisy death throes? Should have been an entertaining couple of minutes for my neighbors.

ps. the aforementioned red heeler is up for adoption, even before yesterday's events. You can be assured of a critter free backyard. She's a natural born killer that one

Oh yes, rabbits have this nasty yet pathetic-sounding squeal when they're being attacked/killed by something.

Unless it was a quick death, any neighbors that might have been home certainly knew something was up in your yard.

when i was little my uncle shot a bird with a bb gun. and it landed outside our fence. our boston terrier stuck it's arm through a little hole in the fence and grabbed the bird and sort of ate it. i have no idea why my uncle let him do that.

Always a proud moment, your dog's first kill.

My dog started killing rats around our house one time and I couldnt' figure how he was doing it cause he's a lab and not that fast, but i watched him do it one day. he caught one of them running along the wall and chased it under our lawn mower (yes, we were those college kids who left their mower in the yard because they had no garage), so he trapped it under there and just dug it out.

He also broke open my fence gate and killed a cat once, but that's another story.

We used to have a couple of Britany's when I was growing up. Great bird dog. Burnt Orange and white in color and just a natural born bird dog. Anway, I have NO idea how they used to do it but I swear on my life those dogs would catch BIRDS and kill them. I'm presuming when the birds would come down to eat seed that had fallen on the ground the dogs, really our girl, Babe, would attack. She was awesome. What a great dog.

My old lazy Weimaraner somehow snagged a squirrel when we lived in Florida. Thing is, she didn't kill it, only paralyzed it. My husband had the task of finishing the job.

i was walking my roommates jack russel one day at our apt complex. it was night time and everything was calm, but all of a sudden she dove into a bush barking wildly and came out with a cat in her mouth. she had it by the back and shook it to death. i was trying to stop it but it was over within 10 seconds. all these people started coming out of their apts b/c of the commotion. pretty embarassing.

Dogs don't screw around when it comes to critters in their yard.

My two previous Texas yellow dogs (mostly yellow labs from the pound), caught and killed several birds, a huge wild rabbit, and sadly, a little kitten that had made its way under my privacy fence.

Regarding how birds get caught, some may be trying to get a bite to eat and are snatched up, but some also take great pleasure in taunting dogs. I've seen it on several occasions, as a bird will swoop down just to screw with my dogs.

Some have greatly underestimated the paw speed of my pooches.

I have no doubt that such smart *** moves have cost many a bird his life in my backyard.

Fockin A, I figured a cat could take a jack russell, or at least run away from it. Must've been trapped.

Speaking of cat, my two year olds been chasing mine with a baseball bat. Should I be alarmed?

My dog annihilated her dinner tonight, every morsel!

Seriously, the ferrel cats in the area don't come in our yard, they go around. They state at her and antagonize her but then I have something for them when they do that. So they just move on. I like having some in the area for rodents and to make being outside fun for the dog.

I loathe when a possum is back there though. They sketch me out.

I came home from work one day and only one of my dogs came to greet me. I went out to the back porch and my chocolate lab was barking at a half dead mockingbird. I went to grab it and my lab picked it up and ran away.

I spent the next 10 minutes chasing him around the yard. I finally cornered him and he he took two big bites and swallowed the bird. I still have the image of the little bird feet sticking out of his mouth.

This is a funny thread. My lab is seven years old and has just recently started this kind of activity. In the past 2 months he has killed at leat 4 birds (and half eaten them), chased an oppossum out of the yard, and treed a racoon.

Of course, he didnt have a proper backyard until we moved back to Texas and he's been living the high life ever since. In fact, he lost 18 pounds in the first month we were back.

My Sissy (not an appropriate name for a true killer, I know) has 4 squirrels and 2 birds under her belt. She'll never stop trying for more. She is one bloodthirsty *****.

She dragged two of those squirrels and one bird into the house without me looking. She dropped them at my feet with her tail wagging as if to say, "Look what I did Mommy!" I couldn't scold her -- she was so proud of herself.

I had a big white lab named Sam that jumped into a bush and came out holding an owl by the head. Sam shook that owl violently and the body popped right off. Sam then proceeded to eat the head.

My current black lab puppy has proven to be adept at killing rats. I keep finding rat tails in my back yard. Olive will be playing with them like toys, flipping them in the air and catching them. She got her first kill when she was about 3 months old.

drycreek, I had a Brittany growing up as well (GREAT dogs) and saw her come very close on several occasions from running at full speed and jumping up in the air to get the bird.. only saw her catch one though...

She went from that in her young age to saving a drowning sparrow in a flooding rainstorm in her old age

Go out to get the paper yesteday morning and there is a cat (not mine) carrying a dead rabbit though our front bushes. Cat sees me coming, drops the dead rabbit, and runs off. I wait two days thinking the cat will come back for her kill, but she never dose. Then I have the lovely task of getting rid of the carcass.

I can't claim this Hawk as my pet, but I was lucky enough to snap these photos. Poor little squirrel. Notice the tiny squirrel toes in the second photo.
