Either way, both AJ and Connor were part of a great 4 years, including the one year wonder of Durant, and the Elite Eight appearance when Tucker, Aldridge, and Gibson were here.
I love Damion James. I'd love for him to come back if that's what he wants.
However, what he needs to demonstrate to move up in the draft is an ability to take his defender off the ball. Not only do I wonder if he's actually ever going to be capable of that, but next year Texas has Jordan Hamilton coming in, a 6'7 Paul Pierce type, who will get the bulk of the minutes at the 3. If James is going to be on the floor, it's almost certainly going to be at the 4, like what he did his freshman season with Durant. I don't see how that will help his professional career.
IMO, he might as well go now with the weak draft, rather than go next year with a much stronger group. He'll be drafted on potential.
Connor - Connor was my favorite player. He reminded me of my older favortie, Brian Boddicker. Although some people are critical of his play this year, he is one of the best to play for Texas. He's made huge shots for us, and he represents this school in one of the best fashions. By being an academic all american, graduating, and even going to graduate school. Just because he didnt live up to HornFans's expectations, doesnt mean this kid wasnt rock solid. Because he was.
AJ - Again, one of my absolute favorites. I remember talking to my basketball coach in HS about you. He was telling me how you were the real deal, and Texas got a great talent. Well guess what, he was right. You stepped onto the court as a freshman and shot/acted like a senior your entire career. Your clutch shot, the quick release, the confidence.. everything was just amazing. Ill miss hearing Craig Way scream "AJ FOR 3!! ITS GOOD!!" You did some great things for this program. You played on 4 very different but very talented teams. You played with the greats of UT basketball including Dj, KD, and Gibson. And you were an asset to their improvements just as they were to yours. Despite what HornFan's says, you are absolutely one of the greatest to put on the jersey. Fan's now a days take players like you for granted, and you are one in a million. I know you will find a place in the NBA. Keep working hard and never doubt yourself. Youre an amazing athlete, and all these people who say youre "selfish" or "cant make the NBA" will quickly realize what we are missing once your gone and making an impact in the league.
I love both of these guys. I know I and many HornFans will miss you greatly. You both have wonderful careers and live's ahead of you. Just always bleed orange. And..
It is disappointing to know that Abrams & Atchley have played their last games for us, but they'll leave us with a lot of good memories. Thanks for representing UT so well.
With all the discussion on DJ going pro vs staying - what would have happened had Connor left last year? I remember hearing in the spring of 2008 that most scouts were projecting him in the late 2nd round after his senior year. Obviously that's not going to happen now. Any chance that he would have been a late draft pick after his junior year from some team that needed an extra big body in the post and liked his outside shooting ability and help defense?
