So I watched the 2003 LSU/Ole Miss Game Last Night

Thoughts... Muschamp's defense was phenomenal. They ran so many stunts and put Eli Manning on his *** so often that it moved. With the wisdom of the past five years to put things in perspective, LSU's defensive performance is much more impressive in hindsight. Despite all of the stunts and blitzes brought by Muschamp, Brandon Jacobs could never break free and Ole Miss' running game was not a factor. I remember at the time thinking that Marcus Spears was awesome, but after watching him suck for 3 seasons with Dallas, it seems obvious that the linebacker stunt packages just overwhelmed college O-Lines, allowing Spears to break through one on one. This is great for the Horns as guys like Orakpo can benefit in the same manner.

The game was close. Only a 17-14 LSU win, but that was due to Eli Manning playing a solid game under constant pressure. The only flaw I saw with Muschamp's system was that Manning was able to hit big plays when he wasn't on his ***... so solid corner play is a must.

And even with that, if the best kicker in the country doesn't have his worst day ever, OM wins that game 20-17. LSU has a voodoo hex on other people's kickers.

I was at that game.

Ole Miss scored one of it's two TDs when LSU QB Matt Mauck made a dreadful decision to throw a pass into the flats while backed up on his own goalline, resulting in an INT and a walk-in Ole Miss TD.

The last Ole Miss play from scrimmage was one of the most anti-climactic things I've ever seen in a football game of that magnitude and excitement. While trying to rally his team from a 17-14 deficit and facing 4th-and-long, Manning dropped back and... tripped and fell down for a self-imposed sack that turned the ball over to LSU. From the visitors' section in the end zone, we initially couldn't even tell what happened, but we knew it must have been something good when the Tiger Band started playing the "Chinese Bandits" theme.
