So I watched Avatar

My in-laws brought it with them this past weekend on their visit and asked us to watch it with them. I have got to say it is, in my opinion, one of the most non thought provoking, unoriginal(see Dances With Wolves), over hyped, poorly written, cliche filled( the hard core Marine colonel), and undeserving oscar nominated film I have seen since Ghost.

And this was seen as serious competition for The Hurt Locker

!!!!

Do not waste your time.

I saw it for the first time last weekend and although I was fully prepared to hate The Biggest Grossing Movie Of All Time, I actually liked it. Sure, it was derivative and a little corny, but all movies aimed at a mass audience are. It must have looked great in 3D.

BTW, I didn't see all the '09 Best Picture nominees, but I liked District 9 and Up more than The Hurt Locker.

Lol, as a Combat Engineer, I can assure you the Hurt Locker is not a stretch by any means. There are cowboys all over the engineers and EOD. Not saying they're right, wrong, or indifferent, but they're most definitely present. And most of them are VERY good at their job.

The people complaining are an older, more professional generation. Much like your grandpa who never understood your music, they don't understand the "new breed" entering the ranks, and don't like the way "their" profession is being portrayed, even though in this day and age, it's not innacurate.

I didn't feel cheated out of my ticket money for Avatar, but that movie is fading from my memory with amazing speed. Hurt Locker was better, but I thought Up In the Air and An Education were better than both of them.

Why the hell are people watching Avatar not in 3D? They shouldn't even be selling it in non-3D. Watching it in HD or SD is a waste of time, 3D is what makes the movie. You can say it didn't have much of a plot, but that's not why people went to watch it. I mean, people don't watch porn because it has interesting story lines, they watch it for the images, same with Avatar.

+1 to 3D and theatre being necessary. It was an Oscar nominee because it may change the way movies are marketed, and further, how they are made. If 20 years from now, every action adventure film is in 3D, Avatar deserves a lot of credit for bringing it to the mainstream.

on SIrius the other day, the Stern channel, they had the executive producer of avatar. his advice was wait for blu ray.

I cannot fathom attempting to watch Avatar not in 3D. If you flat out HATE the story and what it is about I don't think 3D will matter. But for anybody who has not seen it yet, wait for the 3D if you can.

It looks great on Bu-Ray and I've watched it about 3 times. May not be the best Oscar nominee, but its the easiest to rewatch, and is certainly the easiest on the eyes.

The best thing about ****** movies is you don't have to watch them. Avatar is what it is, just like any big budget blockbuster in the history of cinema -- anyone who doesn't seem to understand this can stay in the foreign film aisle at Blockbuster.

The plot was derivative, the characters shallow, and it was absolutely gorgeous -- truly a feast for the eyes. It transported me in a way that few movies can, even though it was not deep. With the 3D and Imax, I felt like I was there.

I recommend watching this movie with few expectations regarding plot and character development, and just let your eyes enjoy something spectacular -- but you need to see it in 3D and preferably Imax.

Go spend a few thousand on one of those new 3D LCDs with the glasses, then head out to the pastures near Bastrop early one morning to pick some magic shrooms off the cow patties and you will love this movie.

With a retread plot and poor characters a lot of eye candy is not going to save a movie for me. There were some excellent technical aspects but the movie was crap. So with a nod to the horride Disney version, I call it Pocohantas In Space. OP made an excellent comparison so pehaps Dances With Smurfs would serve as well.

You know I was going to complain about those tendril things hanging down from the trees that look like cheap LED runway lighting strings you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot and how they were the only unbelievable special effect, but after that acid dropping comment, I think that would be an acceptable and effective way to compensate.

I'm sorry, that movie was absolutely horrible, whereas Jurassic Park and Star Wars were awesome movies. But, everyone I went with loved it. I guess they were amazed by the 3D which did nothing for me. I also have friends that told me they will not see it and could've told me it sucked without ever seeing it. Dances with Smurfs is awesome.

I think Crazy Heart should have won best picture.

Just imagine what a movie like the Matrix or Lord of The Rings or the original Star Wars had been like if they had had the 3D technology and graphics work that were put into Avatar. At the time, I'm sure Matrix would've totally blown my mind twice since I had already had my mind blown by the plot alone.

Interesting. The 3-D is sorta cool, but not that big of a deal to me. I'm beginning to wonder if I see it the way some of you do.
