so I got a DVD recorder

Better than I could have expected. As I transferred a lot of my own home movies, personal VHS tapes, etc., to DVD, it was amazing to see how well the transfer went. The quality on the DVD playback was just as good as the original VHS (which unfortunately, was not good to begin with).

Rigged with my TiVo, this thing is going to be incredible.

But what really pisses me off is that I can't transfer all the crappy VHS movie tapes I bought over the years onto DVD. I paid for the damn things, so I should be able to do whatever I want with it, assuming I don't go out on the streets of manhattan with a bed sheet trying to sell pirated DVDs.

Does anyone know anyway to be able to record VHS movies (that one legally bought, and has no intention of distributing illegally to others) on a DVD recorder?

I was hoping you'd bought a burner, as I'm thinking about getting one but not sure how well they work. The thing I don't like about the standalone recorders is the fact that you can't have software overrides like on your PC.

I've never used a DVD burner, but here's a guess: does it have something to do with that little tab that is taken out of movie videos that isn't taken out of blank videos? Try and cover up the hole with tape and it might work.

The majority of your VHS tapes are encoded with Macrovision. You can buy cheap devices that defeat the Macrovision encryption, but they don't work that great. Here are a couple.

my dad bought one of those macrovision descrambler deals when i was a kid. it was the most worthless piece of **** ever.

God bless the personal computer, cheaper, better, and no DMRs BS.

I plan to run a TIVO clone with normal cable, and have a DVDr to burn when needed.
