Hi all-

After perusing this board over the last month and reading the warnings the last couple of weeks about security concerns w/ IE, I decided to make the switch to another browser. I selected Mozilla 'cause it was free and from what I've read, a good selection. As it is, I have enjoyed the switch and feel confident that I have reduced my risk by getting off IE. My question is now that I have it, how important is it that I scan for spyware? I use spybot and adaware and have found nothing but cookies with them. How necessary is it that I still use these products and should I consider using others? I got the impression that using anything but IE would solve many of these securtiy issues, is this really true?

Also, is there any risk in leaving IE on my computer even if I don't use it. I read that someone said that I still need it to windows update, is this true? Could I uninstall it, or is it like many of the integrated MS products that will not uninstall?

The two things that i really like about firefox is the tabs (really nice) and the very few clicks that it takes to delete cookies and temp. int. files, when compared to IE. What other "cool" fuctions does it have that I may not know about?

Thanks for the insight from previous posts and anything that you see fit to suggest.

you'll still need IE for the websites that won't work for Firefox and they are out there. Also I don't get this (I use Firefox also). Tab browsing is great but unlike say Avant Browser where this is a built in feature...clicking on a link opens up another window, instead of another tab in the same window. Kind of defeats the purpose of having the tab features in my opinion.

Ychang-

I figured that since web pages are still designed with IE in mind, that I would run into this problem. But as of yet, I haven't had a problem with viewing any pages.

on the tab thing, if you right click on the link, then you have the choice to open in a new window or in a new tab. Another really cool feature is that you can open an entire folder in your bookmarks as tabs in one window by right clicking on the folder and selecting "open in tabs"...pretty cool

For IE, just turn your security settings all the way to high. Then add whatever websites you have to use IE for to the list of "trusted" sites.

Run your spyware stuff occasionally, but you'll probably find you never need it. You might think about managing your cookies so you only get cookies from sites you trust/want also.

why go though all that when you can just use a much better browser in Mozilla?

IE isnt the best browser out there anymore

I use Avant as my primary browser ... have for some time. The tab concept is hard to get away from and Avant makes it easy. My problem is that Avant sits on top of the IE engine - so you're basically still running IE (short for I'm Easy) and vulnerable to 98% of the browser hacks out there.

Firefox is faster than IE or Avant and much less vulnerable to attacks of hacks, because who wants to write hack code for 1% of the population? Firefox does have a semi-tab option, but you have to work at it. Some websites will not display correctly though - including some of the skin sites for Mozilla itself. That's funny.

Unless you get rid of IE altogether, which you can't, you go to all that trouble to lock it down because it takes all of 10 seconds to do. Better safe than sorry with that piece of crap.

One cool Firefox feature is you can highlight a word or several words, right-click and select "Web Search" to automatically open a Google search in a new tab.
