So how many programs run in the background?

I had to start in safe mode last night and it fired up in no time compared to normal. I've gone back to the old days of pressing power and walking away. Is this a sign of mucho spyware? Yes. I do still have Kazaa, but I rarely use it. I just can't quit cold turkey! Maybe with the allofmp3 I just started using I can.

Incidentally, I was in safe mode to run defrag. If it took ~5 hours to run, what does that say about the fragmentation of my drive?

i used to have norton internet security + anti virus 04 on the computer, but i recently uninstalled both and got the corporate version that UT provides for free and i've noticed a lot less programs running.

Norton runs alot (and i mean *ALOT*) of crap in the background. Atleast the older ones, I have 2005 on my comp and it doesn't seem to be too bad, but there's still a couple things. To answer Jeevsie, there's no exact number of processes that run, if you access the task manager (ctrl + alt + del) and click on the "processes" tab there will be all of them listed. A decent number, is around 30-40. Of course the more you have the slower it can cause your system to run, it all depends on how good your system is and what not. If you have no spyware protection, it is likely you have some spyware and getting adaware & spybot would not hurt.

you can also speed up your boot up by going into the start-up tab in your system configuration (click start -> run -> type: msconfig -> click "ok" -> click tab that reads "start-up" [far right] ) and remove check marks for unnecessary start-up items like AIM, MSN, Yahoo, lots of other crap you really dont need to start up.

hope this helps.

hope this helps some.
