So BO says Egypt is not an'ally'

"“I don’t think that we would consider them an ally, but we don’t consider them an enemy,” Obama said.

And a handler tries to back him up, Big mistake as now BO can't backtrack and pretend he didn't say that
"“I think folks are reading way too much into this,” Vietor said. “‘Ally’ is a legal term of art. We don’t have a mutual defense treaty with Egypt like we do with our NATO allies.

FACTS prove otherwise
well until BO issues ab EO to change it

from AP of all places
"This week's storming of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo by an angry mob has sent U.S.-Egyptian relations to a new low, prompting President Barack Obama to say he doesn't see the two countries as allies.

But under U.S. law, they are.The Link

Have his supporters had time to ' clarify" this?

Actually this is one of the few things he's said/done on this that I probably agree with. There may be some technical agreement or statute deeming Egypt an "ally," but whether or not two countries are truly allies is based on their relationship.

If you listen to his entire comment, what Obama was saying was that the regime in Egypt is new and that it's too early to judge them as allies or enemies. I don't really disagree with that. They are sorta where Castro was in the late '50s. They could go either way at this point. Hopefully they won't follow the same path Castro followed.

but Mr Deez
if you read the AP link it is clear that Egypt IS considered an ally under US Law. BO can't make up his own terms

and while the Egyptian gov't IS new we do not nullify any allies when they change governments. look at the UK for instance. They remain an ally no matter whether it is Labor Or Conservative in power.

No this was a really stupid mistake on BO's part and now everyone is trying to walk it back.

edit to add
I don't mean You Mr. D are trying to whitewash it for him
I mean his WH and State are scrambling to make sure the Wrold knows Egypt IS an ally no matter what BO said

MrD
It may look like nitpicking but how does it look in 'diplomanspeak ) to Egypt?

The point is BO can not decide to change the terms and he should NOT change the terms now.
Even the WH Admin understands this as they have said of course Egypt IS an ally.

I get your point but I think that kind of thing matters to those countries.

I agree it may be nitpicking but what an incumbent President cannot do is decide that previous treaties or alliances are null and void. There is a process and a constitution in place and words like that need to be chosen carefully.

Just out of curiousity was he reading off a teleprompter or off the cuff when he said it?

If I was betting I would say off the cuff because we all now how stupid this guy is when he isn't reading what he is saying.

MWA, what makes you think an incumbent President can't void matters of the State? He's been backdooring policy after policy for three years without regard to Congress or law. If he wants to reconstruct treaties and such, he'll darn well do what he wants. He's the annointed one.

FWIW, the Muslim Brotherhood is now acting like an ally compared to the rhetoric they gave that initially incited the violence. Today local police used riot control methods to constrain the protesters and the Muslim Brotherhood condemned the violence.
