I can't believe that the game won't be shown on Dish in HD.
So they created an HD channel for LHN and they used it to show one football game in HD? I really thought the basketball and baseball games would be shown in HD. I believe it's time for another phone call to customer service.
I thought Turner looked silky smooth. Taylor took too long to get going, but once he was on, he looked great as well.
I know that "first game of the season" thoughts don't bode for pretty much anything, but here's some of what I saw:
1. Perimeter D still needs to work on rotating. NDSU was making those shots last year. Ask OU. I think we were fortunate that they never got on a roll, but there were way too many uncontested shots.
2. A team with 85 points should have more than 9 assists. We should've had 9 assists by halftime. Taylor tries too hard to dribble drive distribute, and he's just not consistent at it. Hence the 1:1 turnover to assist ratio, as usual.
3. Ridley looked a little slower than last year. Not sure if he's nursing an injury or something. Maybe his role has just changed with the addition of Turner and the weight loss of Holmes. We don't need Cam taking those kind of shots with... well... pretty much any other forward on the roster capable of making them. Turner, Lammert, and Holmes can more than accomplish those mid-to-high-lane shots. Ridley needs to settle down and let someone else do those.
4. Holland was a pleasant surprise. Knew he had handles but he played like a champ. Very Royal Ivey-esque.
5. We're in good hands with Turner. If he's not a one-and-done, we could be in for some big, big things.
I thought it was a great sign that we didn't really get a lot of interior scoring, but the midrange and outside shooting carried us. That didn't happen last year.
Taylor definitely looked off in the first half, but he came back and really did some nice things in the second.
Was really surprised that Holmes only played 15 minutes. Barnes had mentioned after the game that he had taken some people out because they weren't doing what he wanted them to do in their roles - was Holmes in that boat?
Really would like to see Croaker or Yancy step up. But the good news is this looks like a team where for the first time in a while, we're not going to have stretches where we only have one or two people on the floor at a time that can score.
The thing that stood out on defense to me was that NDS had all kinds of trouble with our size. They may have had some open looks, but they also really struggled to get anything up from the paint. You could definitely tell that they were not getting good looks inside.
I'm excited - looking forward to seeing the Horns at MSG next week!
