Please help! My boyfriend's snoring is driving me nuts. Does anyone have any advice? I try rolling him on his side but that only stops it for a few minutes.
I had a bad snoring problem for years. Turns out that I have sleep apnea. Basically I halfway suffocate when I sleep. If he is a terrible snorer and gets sleepy during the middle of the day he should get checked out for it. My ultimate solution was to sleep with a small air machine called a CPAP. I never knew what I was missing until I tried it.
One alternative that you can try is they sell a small nose clip at Brookstone that cuts down on snoring. It is plastic and clips between the nostrils like a ring in a bulls nose, but much smaller and not very noticable. It is supposed to open up the septum and decrease snoring. When I dont have my breathing machine and I wear it I have been told that my snoring is much less noticable.
Have him see a doc about it, if he does indeed have sleep apnea, he does have a few options. If its not sleep apnea, then there are sprays and clips that may work like wolf suggested.
If it is sleep apnea, then you'll both be glad he got it treated. I have this and I am using a CPAP machine. I dont think i have slept as good as I do now in years.
If you have any questions, several posters on here have gone through the same thing. Just keep us updated.
As wolfman stated, it could be sleep apnea. Many snorers have it. There are different types of sleep apnea and he would need to see an ENT and possibly get a sleep study to diagnose his particular problem. Surgery (50% effective) or a CPAP machine are possible solutions for sleep apnea. Throat sprays and nose clips are not said to be very effective for most. Ear plugs or a new boyfriend for you might be the only cheap and quick fix.
In the meantime you might want to duct tape a hair dryer (set cold & low) to his nose at night to provide a continuous air flow simulating a CPAP machine. It's not really going to work, but it's good for a few humiliation laughs and you are certainly deserving of that given what you have been putting up with.
Or, you also get him to go to a dentist and get a device made for about $175 that he wears at night. It is basically a mouth guard that causes his lower jaw to move forward slightly and free the throat so that air can flow without the snoring. It works very well for some folks.
Or, if you can get him to sleep at a 45 degree angle by piling up pillows that will perhaps free up his throat passage.
But he really does need to see a doctor to get it taken care of.
foxyhorn,You're not implying you're sleeping with your boyfriend are you? Shame shame shame.
Actually, yes, like the others said, your boyfriend probably has sleep apnea. I had it as well, and drove my then-girlfriend nuts. I took the surgery route because I didn't want to be tied to a machine. There's the recovery period, and then he may need to change the way he drinks fluids.
I am the evil snoring boyfriend of foxyhorn. How much does the CPAP cost? is there a web site? Also for the surgery, is there anyway I can find out more information on that. Foxyhorn will thank you.
Do a google for UPPP (Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty) surgery.
When I had it done, the surgeon cut out my tonsils and back end of the upper palate, including the uvula. He probably took 1/4" too much off, so I need to concentrate when drinking fluids so it doesn't come out my nose. I used to snore like a freight train (neighbors could hear me through walls), but it's down to occassional heavy breathing nowadays.
I agree with tropheus....Ive been on it for about 3 months and have no problems. As for the costs, with insurance you may only have to pay up to 100 dollars if even that. Without insurance, you could be looking in the neighborhood of 1500 or so. If you do decide to get one, definately get one with the humidifier, you'll be glad you did. I went the first week without using it and started getting some nasty nosebleeds. Since I started to use the humidifier, i havent had any problems.
I had really bad snoring but no apnea. Woke up dozens of times a night.
Went to an ENT and got surgery for deviated septum, uvulectomy [removed the punching bag] and had palates stiffeners inserted. He recommended against UPPP in my case.
Still had some snoring and the ENT recommended that I swab the back of the throat with a solution of 1 part glycerin to 2 parts water and spit it out. I switched that to 1 to 1 and voila, no snoring for at least two months now. Sometimes also put a little Bacytracin ointment in the nose to move air along.
He told me to lay off the snoring sprays because they are a ripoff. Glycerin is about 3 dollars a bottle which will last you a month.
I just cant believe anything that simple worked but it did. I would definitely recommend trying that first.
I think after reading the thread on the NASA foam matteress, I think it might just be easier to get one of those. Then I will sleep so well it won't matter how loud he snores!
Dude, ear plugs. Once you get used to them you will sleep with them all the time. I don't wake up to dogs barking but can still hear the alarm in the morning.
how does one approach their insurer about a ENT study and what is the typical out of pocket cost? I beleive I may be suffering from SA. I don't snore when sleeping up right (like on an flight) or when air if blowing in my nose, or on my face. but in bed it drives my woman crazy, she's wearing earplugs. I don't really care abiout her, but sometimes it wakes my up, not really the noise but a only what I can describe as a 'startling' feeling like, maybe it's the suffocation thing that mentioned in another post.
Bullza: what does the homemade solution taste lie?
I dont know what kind of insurance arrangement you may have, but I talked to my primary care provider and he did an insurance referral to a Neurologist who is a sleep specialist. I have a HMO policy. You should just talk to your insurance company to see if this sort of thing is covered or not.
