I was thinking about Saturday Night Live last week. I think this is one of the worst casts ever, with few entertaining recurring characters. And that got me thinking about former casts and characters. I'd like to know your favorites in the following categories:

Cast
Male regular
Female regular
Guest host
Guest host opening monologue
Recurring character
Ad
Digital short
Sketch

Here are mine:

Cast -- The original NRFPTP
Male regular -- Phil Hartman
Female regular --Gilda Radner
Guest host -- Alec Baldwin
Guest host opening monologue -- Paul Simon in a turkey suit
Recurring character -- The Samurai
Ad -- The Love Toilet
Digital short -- (tie) CILL My Landlord and Lazy Sunday
Sketch -- Land Shark

Excellent Post!
I've got to fit Mr. Bill in there somewhere!!! My favorite ad would have to be "Bass O Matic"!!

Cast: Late 90s
Male regular: Phil Hartman
Female regular: Kristin Wiig
Guest host: Alec Baldwin
Guest host opening monologue: Nic Cage's "really large breasts" one.
Recurring character: Will Ferrell's Alex Trebek and Darrell Hammond's Sean Connery.
Ad: Oops! I Crapped My Pants
Digital short: Dick in a Box or Jonah dating Andy's Dad
Sketch: Honestly too many to list... Celebrity Jeopardy was always good. I always laugh when I see a Landshark one.

Weekend Update anchor: Norm MacDonald
Best head writer: Tina Fey

This is a great topic choice. My choices are due to my age. I've seen clips of the original cast and think they're great, but they aren't mine. In football terms, I'm a Ricky guy, cause I wasn't born when Earl was around.

Cast: Farley, Sandler, Spade.
Male regular: Farley
Female regular: Cheri Oteri
Guest host: Alec Baldwin
Guest host opening monologue: Joe Montanya...Father and son in the audience get up and leave cause they thought the host was Joe Montana.
Recurring character: Gap Girls
Ad: Colon Blow
Digital short: Any of the Ambiguously Gay Duo
Sketch: Schmidt's Gay

Note that I added news anchor

Cast Original NRFPTP
Male regular Eddie Murphy
Female regular Kristin Wiig
Guest host Justin Timberlake
Recurring character Nat X / Church Lady / Matt Foley
Digital short "D**k in a Box"
News Anchor Dennis Miller

When I started thinking about it, there were just too many super talented people who were regulars and too many very clever recurring sketches for me to limit it to one per category. What a show.

Cast: 1990-93
Male regular: Eddie Murphy
Female regular: Jan Hooks
Guest host: Tom Hanks
Guest host opening monologue: 5 times club
Recurring character: Hartman's Sinatra
Ad: The Centurion, Handi Off,
Digital short: Natalia Portman raps
Sketch: 3 Mile Island

Agreed that it is impossible to list them all. Some of my favs;

Celebrity Jeopardy- Might be all time fav
Dana Carvey as Bush/Perot/Johnny Carson
Phil Hartman as Sinatra/Ed Mcmahon/caveman lawyer
Adam Sandler as Cajun Man/Turkey song/opera man
Eddie Murphy as Gumby/Mister Robinson/Velvet Jones (hilarious how to be a ho)
John Belushi as Samuri/Bruce jenner/
Mike Meyers as Deiter/waynes world/
Will farrell as bush/cheerleaders

Too many to list. Incredible show that comes back strong time and time again

I haven't watched in YEARS, but it really has been one of the most enduring and funny runs for a show if not THE most. Can't think of any show that could top it for longevity and relevance.

Hard to go against Texanne's picks... so I won't.

I do recall the Anthony Michael Hall years as being a very low point for SNL.

All I can say is thank god for Second City.

After watching SNL from the start, it really is a tough one. Like Texanne, I tend to be partial to the originals, but there have been one or two every year that make it worthwhile watching.

Cast -- The original NRFPTP
Male regular -- Phil Hartman
Female regular --Gilda Radner
Guest host -- Alec Baldwin
Guest host opening monologue -- Hmmm Paul Simon yes, but Taylor Swift's "Not Gonna Sing About That" also comes to mind
Recurring character -- Belushi's Samurai, any of Gilda Radner's, both Bushes
Ad -- The Love Toilet
Digital short -- hmmm, Ambiguously Gay Duo comes to mind, but I know there are others
Sketch -- "Massive Head Wound Harry", mostly because we had Goldens for years and the Golden in the sketch is just priceless!

News Anchor: Chevy Chase and then Dennis Miller

Favorite duo: Spartan cheerleaders and Delicious Dish

Favorite catch phrase: Jane, you ignorant slut!

I loved Dana Carvey's Church Lady, and one of my favorite skits was Martin Short and Men"s Synchronized Swimming. And the Wild and Crazy Guys.

Great thread Texanne - brings back some great memories. Some I could not limit to single answers.

Cast: 70's & most of the 80's, some of the 90's - hard to pick one cast
Male regulars: Aykroyd, Myers, Carvey, Murphy, Hartman, Farley, Crystal
Female regulars: Radner, Curtain, Hooks, Sweeney, Oteri
Guest host: Steve Martin
Guest host opening monologue: Robin Williams
Recurring character: Chris Farley Motivational Speaker
Ad:Shimmer - it is a floor wax & desert topping
Digital short: Tounces the Driving Cat & Mr. Bill
Sketch:Church Chat, Pat, Coffee Talk, the Nerds, Wayne's World, Sprockets, Samurai, Emily Latilla
Musical Guest: Boz Skaggs

Junior in Austin when SNL first rolled out in '75 -- students couldn't quite fathom a National Lampoon-type comedy show mercilessly assaulting convention on a Saturday night. Unheard of back then. Drinking and other social habits conformed quickly to the genre. Still, program hit several hills and valleys over last 35 years and may have run it's course.

Nevertheless, my stab at it:

Cast: NRFPTP
Male regular: Bill Murray
Female regular: Laraine Newman
Guest host: Steve Martin
Guest host opening monologue: Frank Zappa
Recurring character(s): Coneheads
Ad: Bass-O-Matic
Digital short: Deep Thoughts
Sketch: Mr. Bill

Original cast, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, et. al.
Loved the Coneheads, Roseann Roseannadana, that take off on cross-fire (Jane, you ignorant slut!) what did they call that skit?, Mr. Bill, The Blues Brothers regular appearances, Samurai Deli, Wild and Crazy Guys, and a great one, the Chippendale dancer audition. So many to choose from, can't narrow it down.
Hard to beat Steve Martin guest hosting.

Steve Martinh and Christopher Walken are by far the best two repeat hosts that SNL has had over the years. Surprised there is no mention of Bill Murray as a cast member.
