SMU basketball is about to kick into overdrive.

Even for Horn fans, and other non-SMU types, there will be some really top notch ACC teams visiting Dallas for games that would be worth seeing in person. Hopefully, they'll host the likes of UNC, Duke, Syracuse, and UVA in the American Airlines Center!!! With basketball, if they play this right, the Ponies can do what they've never quite been able to do with football (for the last 60-70+ years) -- capture the attention, and even the allegiance, of many of the vast hordes of people in Greater Dallas.

Now, put a Triple-D design on your basketball shirts, and you'll be in business Ponies!!!

I don't mind some good in-state basketball competition. Not at all. That is a sport that feeds on having lots of good nearby teams. Look at the State of North Carolina.

It's way better to host at Moody. The big arena is cavernous and would only provide more of an advantage to visiting teams whose fans can buy up tickets.

They have done everything they can with Moody. If they can show they can be somewhat consistently competitive in the ACC (a very big IF) they will build a new arena in a heartbeat. The question will be where since there isn't that much space on the main campus and the land north of the new aquatics center on the north side of the East Campus (across Central) is very expensive. However, the only loss would be several bars which could move further up Greenville.

I mean, there's a big enough footprint for a 10K-seat arena directly across Binkley on the current IM fields. But considering that the renovations to Moody are only 9 years old and it's a very good venue for what it is, I don't think there's a huge groundswell of support for that kind of expense. They're already forfeiting the football TV money. Asking for another $500MM probably isn't going to go over well.

They can play most of their games at Moody, but big games like Duke, UNC, UVA... those can be in the American Airlines Center. That will generate a whole lot of buzz and bring in all sorts of new fans. Weeknight big games at the AA Center may draw a lot of the Uptown/Downtown business crowd that never even went to SMU.

11, those IM fields are used daily, and I doubt they would move them East of Central.

Chop, those are the games they want at Moody for fan support. The net extra funds generated by having the games at AAC will not be worth the noise they can generate at Moody.

A handful of the big games at the American Airlines Center could work wonders to SMU basketball's popularity among the non-SMU Dallas residents. Lots of local hype. A big boost to the status and renown of their program.

I still disagree. It'll work wonders for ACC basketball popularity in the area, but not for the Mustangs. It'll just bring out the Tar Heels, Blue Devils, Hurricanes, etc. Moody has way more upside... the biggest reason being that they keep all the $$ from it.

The AAC itself will be on the chopping block within 5 years. Cuban has already said there's a greater-than-50% chance the Mavs aren't renewing for the 2031 season and beyond. We're probably looking at the aspect of Arlington picking up two more DFW franchises if Dallas doesn't get its **** together.

I think both/AND.

smu will be on TV a lot more often pLaying the big dogs. Plus NIL

edited for spelling :)

Is smu getting tv money from sports other than football or does that non-revenue sharing with the acc apply across the board? I assume they will get their tier 3 rights but that won’t apply to conference games.

SMU

Last year 24-9 overall. 2nd place in their mid-major conference.

It's pretty messed up that SMU didn't get a bid to the Big Dance last year.

If they play well in the ACC, they should be in March Madness most years.

NCAA Tournament snubs: Biggest men's team omissions from March Madness

SMU was a huge snub two seasons ago, but last year they were 10-22 with zero wins over Power-5 teams. It was a rebuilding year, to say the least, with all of their best players portaled from the year before.
