SMU vs. Rice Tonight on ESPN

Hey Texas fans. I know most of you couldn't give two shits about SMU or Rice but hey, its two Texas teams and its college football. SMU is ushering in a new era with June Jones at the helm and there seems to be at least a pulse with SMU football for the first time in decades. I graduated from SMU in 2006 and I don't think most of our students knew we even had a team. Since the hiring of Jones, season ticket sales have increased at a remarkable rate (hovering around 9,000 season ticket holders) and a sellout of our allotment of tickets for the Rice game.

Bad news for the Ponies is that we have over a dozen freshmen on the two deep roster including starting a true freshman at QB Bo Levi Mitchell from Katy. Mitchell was committed to Hawaii before Jones left for SMU so he was a target for JJ early on. It could be a rough one for the Ponies, but what the hell. I'll throw it out there.

SMU 38
Rice 31

SMU sure is marketing the hell out of June Jones here in Dallas. Billboards all over the place, "June Cometh", and tons of radio spots on sports radio. Given the amount of freshmen expecting playing time that you pointed out, I'm a little worried that all this June Jones hype has Epic Fail written all over it. At least for this year.

Charleston,

I agree I think SMU could be in for a rough year. Playing that many freshman is never a good thing. However, I think most people understand that this season isn't about wins and losses, its about progress. I want to see a different team in week 6 than week 1 and a different team in week 12 than week 6. Hopefully by the end of the season we will have made some serious strides.

The June man is back! We'll see how his manhood is tonight...

Who knows what type of season SMU is gonna have... Over/under 55 pass attempted for the Ponies!

I thionk we should bet them back on the schedule...It would be like thumping Rice every year.

I'll watch the game. We are soooooo desperate for a good scouting report on Rice.

ha ******* ha. We have to start somewhere. I don't think anyone thought SMU was capable of landing a coach of June Jones' pedigree. If he can duplicate the success he had at Hawaii at SMU then what a story that would be.

If JJ can deliver SMU's first victory at Rice Stadium since the death penalty, he might actually be worthy of the second coming praise he's receiving. Especially with the game nationally televised on ESPN-- I'm sure Texas fans recall Rice plays a bit over their heads under the lights and in front of ESPN cameras.

Bailiff is actually doing pretty good things over at Rice. Particularly in upgrading the caliber of athlete wearing the blue and gray. The Rice-Texas game in 2011 might actually be within 3 TD's at the half.

Jones walked into an even worse situation at Hawaii in 1999 and they won a share of the conference and their bowl game for a 9-4 overall record. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

This Casey kid is everywhere. I like the fact that Rice is utilizing the best player(Casey) on their team as much as possible. He just needs to play some defense and Rice will win easily.

So, what does June Jones call his defensive squad?.... "Not The Offense"

He looks completely disinterested in his own defense. Like, he looks ticked that he can't just always be on offense.

June Jones eats Tampa-2s and craps Z-hooks.

The SMU kids are on the sidlines getting their asses handed to them and they don't even seem to care...I see them joking around, shootin the ****...

Rice just scored again!

I like the way Rice uses Clement from the shotgun in the run game. they audible into a little run play with the HB as a lead blocker.

that would be a nice play with vondrell and colt. or obi and colt. or johnson and colt.

David Bailiff almost beat aggy with I-AA players at Texas State a few years ago. He may be a very seriously underrated coach. Worth watching.
