Have any of you ever tried the Smoke Haus BBQ in Bertram? It's on Hwy 29, maybe 12 miles or so west of Hwy 183.
I just had lunch there, and really enjoyed the place. I had the pork spare ribs, which were large and amazingly tender. They were very flavorful, but not all that "smokey". My lunch companions' brisket, which I didn't try, didn't have much of a smoke ring, a further hint that they finish their meat off the smoke on indirect heat. Yep -- the counter help confirmed that they start on mesquite (which burns too hot for a full smoke) and then go to the foil. Sides ranged from traditional (potato salad) to unique (grilled country potatoes & onions, and something that looked like a jalapeno cornbread pudding).
So, it's not the most traditional BBQ around, but it had great flavor and incredible tenderness. A nice change of pace, in my opinion. Prices were reasonable -- our lunches (meat + 2 sides) were about $6 without drinks. The local crowd definitely adds to the authenticity.
Give 'em a try . . .
