Singing Our National Anthem.

Here's a really outstanding rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner," performed pre-game at Texas Tech's United Spirit Arena by The Cactus Cuties from Lubbock.

I've only very rarely heard a performance of this song that equals that one.

Very classy and probably strong enough to be heard above that West Texas wind.

For some dated, but still valuable, perspective on performance of our National Anthem, check out Michael Bolton singing it with the words written out on his palm and a whole lot of distressingly distracting delay between his actual voice and the sound system's amplified output.

Finally, remember Seattle Supersonics Head Coach Maurice Cheeks promptly, purposefully and politely coming to the aid of a young, amateur singer who's unfortunately in big trouble.

I think Coach Cheeks deserves eternal credit from the Final Scorekeeper for that timely and generous assist.

Those gals from West Texas were great, weren't they?

When was that Mo Cheeks thing.? Never been as proud to have attended WT as having seen that. I've met Mo several times and he has always been EXTREMELY friendly. This just shows what a great person he is. On, On, Buffaloes!

Speaking of which, did anyone else catch the National Anthem at the Rockets last night, (the Celtics loss)? The singer was a young girl, (maybe 13?).

She was unbelievable. Everyone in the joint was awed.

Everyone. Maybe the best rendition I've ever heard.

bongo: was only there for 2 years before I transferred and that WELL before those ******** moved in. I honestly wouldn't have gone there if it had a&m associated with it.

My younger brother actually graduated from there in 87, also before that ******* Don Powell and his merry bunch moved in. After the aggy invasion, they sent my brother a letter offering to trade his diploma (signed by T Boone Pickens) for a 'much more valuable and respected a&m diploma'. He wrote **** OFF on the letter and sent it back.

Those were all good - esp. the M Cheeks one.

However - this one is my favorite rendition:

1991 NHL All-Star Game

Wayne Messmer sings the National Anthem at Chicago Stadium during the '91 NHL All-Star game, days after the U.S. went into Iraq at the start of the Gulf War. He is nearly drowned out by the crowd.

PS: the Carl Lewis singing of the National Anthem (Nets vs Bulls) is classic and when Charlie Steiner tries to report it on SportsCenter well.... it is still the funniest thing i have ever seen!!
