Just recently "discovered" this beautiful voice and WOW! Some classify her as alt-country, but even that is too narrow.

Very beautiful and haunting voice. Her songwriting really paints some heavy heavy images in your head too.

Do yourself a favor and go out and buy the CD of the Austin City Limits show she did a few years ago. I can't stop listening to this.

Video from the ACL show

If you don't love her voice after this soemthing's wrong with you

BUT she also knows how to have fun. This is from a "punk" band she sang in and played drums in back in the 90s.

She's cute. I likey the skeleton suit.

She's been mentioned before...I think someone had her pic as a sig for awhile. Anyway I agree, really like her stuff...after listening/buying Fox confessor I went ahead and purchase all her old albums as well.

She has a small, but nice part in Pond's new album "Last Light." The album as a whole is crap, but "Taught to Look Away" is a highlight.

Not trying to switch gears on this thread, but:

Neko's background singer in the ACL video (chick inexplicably wearing a suit) is the lovely and talented Kelly Hogan.

This is the cover from her first solo album.

Kelly was in a band called The Jody Grind. They released two fantastic albums before the drummer and bass player were killed in a car wreck when a DUI driver crossed the median on an interstate and crashed into their van. Kelly carried on for a few years in the Rock*a*teens and in another 2 person band with Bill Taft. Bill was the lead guitarist for Smoke and The Jody Grind. This 2 person band was called Kick Me. They were incredible but the emotional pain from the loss of the other two guys was too much so she moved from Atlanta to Chicago and hooked up with Neko. While in Atlanta, Kelly also recorded the solo album shown above. There is a song there called Arms that is about the saddest song I have ever heard. I saw her perform it once with Kick Me and all 1,500 people in the room were crying. It is about the van wreck. (An angel with wings can't hold you like an angel with arms) Anyway, Neko and Kelly did some work with the Pine Valley Cosmonauts and also getting Neko's career really kick-started. Kelly is also performing with a vocal group called "The Flat Five".

If you can find any of Kelly's solo stuff or The Jody Grind, and you like Neko, you will like this. This is the best of the 2 Jody Grind albums. BTW, just after this one was released, they played a show at SXSW. They picked up their instruments, walked out onto 6th Street and continued playing. The buzz around that band, and Kelly in particularly, at the time was amazing. (It was also around this time that I asked Kelly to marry me. ...sadly she turned me down. I told Kelly that Hope Nichols from Fetchin' Bones had also turned me down, so she was in good company.) Oh well, can't win them all.

F drunk drivers and God Bless Kelly Hogan, Bill Taft and the first Jody Grind drummer, Walter Brewer.

1990: One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure
1992: Lefty's Deceiver

Carry on.

She's very good. 'Fox Confessor' has some of the best lyrics you will find in music today.

I also like Ingrid Michaelson and China Forbes. Two other excellent woman singer-songwriters.
