Sing Along With Mitch

Mitch Miller

His show was one of the 3 staples in our house growing up, along with Ed and Jackie. I (and probably thousands of other people) had no idea he was even still alive. Still, the show was fun, and I listen to his Christmas music every year. Always sad when a piece of your childhood passes.

I was also surprised to learn that he lived to the ripe old age of 99. His music was intentionally hokey, but fun, and in some ways a reaction to rock and roll for those who didn't like the new style.

I remember.

Mostly I remember his goatee and the hokey way he conducted the band (or was he actually conducting the audience at home?) and of course the on-screen lyrics with bouncing ball.

If you're of a certain age, you remember this:

Be kind to your web-footed friends,
For a duck may be somebody's mother,
Be kind to your friends in the swamp,
Where the weather is very, very damp,
Well, you may think that this is the end --
Well, it is!

I remember Mitch Miller on TV and Lawrence Welk and The Hit Parade, Perry Como and then American Bandstand and Hootenanny.

RIP Mitch Miller in the fine tradition of American TV music shows.

I remember Shindig and Hullabaloo very well.

The Shindogs were great.

Thanks, Bierce. it's as if that were in a galaxy far, far, away.

Wish I could go back to those days and do it all over again.

Lostman, I had no idea he was still alive either. My wife was born deaf but with hearing aids, she could her some sounds and watching Mitch Miller and the bouncing ball helped her to learn about music. She speaks very clearly and doesn't use sign language at all.

I hate listening to that music but he did my wife a great service.
