Since there is no playoff coming...

I have come to the realization that there will probably be no playoff system within the next few decades. I have a solution to what everyone really wants--good regular season games!

I think they should let the NCAA take over scheduling of all non-conference games for the schools. One of the rules for scheduling will reflect something like the NFL. If you are a BCS automatic entry and you place in the top 3 in your conference then you have to automatically play a top 3 team in another automatic entry BCS conference. Just one game a year for the non-conference will potentially be an awesome match-up. They would also have to play a top 3 finish to a non-BCS automatic bid conference. You would apply this same rule for the middle and bottom half of the conference teams.

If they do go to a playoff system I think the only way it could work effectively is to have all D1 schools in a conference and have 16 conferences with no championship games and have automatic bids for a 16 team playoff, that way everyone has a chance to play for a National Title. This too in my mind would allow for great non-conference games, since they could lose a great match-up game but still have a chance by winning their conference.

That is all, please dissect and tell me where I am wrong on my thinking.

First of all, the most recent ruling indicates that "everyone" wants to keep things the way they are (they are wrongly infering the popularity of the sport means it's perfect as is). As is, the schools make their own schedules, and make them way ahead of time. The UT-tOSU series was great, but we knew the matchup was coming when VY signed his letter of intent. At the time we didn't know it would be 2 top 5 teams. I don't see any feasible way of securing a matchup between a "top 3 school in another conference".

There's no way to predict it ahead of time (especially to schedule the game 5 years in advance), and there's no way to schedule it in season. So how is it feasible?

I appreciate the sentiment, but agree there is no practical way to implement the top 3 concept.

Maybe, we could start with lower expectations. If your a BCS conference team, you have to schedule at least one other BCS conference team.

Even if that was decided tomorrow, it would probably be 5+ years before it could practically be enforced given the nature of scheduling.

To do this you would need to stop schools from making their own schedules and set a start date of 2015 for the NCAA to start making schedules.

Wait until the end of the season and when the final bowls are complete you could then sit down (the NCAA) and work on next year schedules.

One other thing that could help the current situation is to rank the top 64 teams in the BCS and after the BCS games are made take the highest two remaining in the BCS and put them in a bowl and so forth down the line until all bowls are filled. You could come up with a rotation like the BCS for top tier bowls to rotate for the key match-up games that would result from the remaining BCS ranked teams. Just a thought.
