simple web application

I'm looking for suggestions on where to start for a project idea I've had.

I want to build a map of a certain set of buildings. Level of map detail isn't all that great, really - basic outline, entrance labels, maybe street names. But then on top of that I want to store and display information about specific spots within each building. Primarily, labs that we've built and what capabilities the labs have. I'm thinking a set of grey outlines for buildings, and colored areas or rooms that can be clicked into to bring up more specific information. I think the object model could probably be extended to handle "where does someone sit" ... or "where is our event next tuesday" ... or lots of other stuff.

I know there's a question there somewhere, but I don't know exactly what it is.

There are a lot of different ways to accomplish what you want to do. The most simple is html (web pages) where the region is clickable and takes you to the info. The image can be as detailed as you want and can be created in anything (from ms paint to visio to photoshop/illustrator). The html would be pretty simple as well (last time I did it was 1998, so it can't be any harder now).

These days, it would probably be a flash animation with clickable areas/zones. The better the flash animator/artist, the better it will look.

Regardless, you need to storyboard or flow chart what you want. A good plan will save a ton of time (and/or money) when actually doing it. DOesn't have to be pretty, but you need to have some idea of what each page and link will do. Then, once that's done, it would be pretty simple to get quotes on having someone do it for you.

best of luck
