Thinking about taking the gf there for v-day. Anybody have any comments? What is the price range like? How long in advance should I make reservations?

never eaten there but a buddy of mine, who is a chef & has cooked all around town, says good things about siena.

Alright, most of the things ive read about this place are very good so im going to make reservations tomorrow - unless anybody has something to add that would convince me otherwise.

Andiamo may bet better -- I haven't been there, but I've looked over their menu and read their reviews -- but you're gonna have a hard time selling the atmosphere there over that of Siena. I mean, Andiamo is in a nondescript bay of a nondescript strip center. At least Siena has some pretty impressive architecture (not to mention very good food) going for it. We're talking Valentine's Day here, so the whole experience is important.

Regardless, neither menu represents "traditional" Italian food as most of us know it. We could argue what's "traditional" for days, but let's just make it clear that neither restaurant is the kind of place where you're likely to find a lot of simple pasta dishes, etc.

If you want a fine traditional Italian meal, I'd suggest Bellagio or Carmelo's. Both do a very good job in a nice, upscale environment. If you want "Tuscan" (Siena) or whatever it is Andiamo serves (and I know it's supposedly very, very good), then go for it, but be prepared to park in front of Thundercloud and you go ahead and try to shine that on to your date.

I don't like Carmello's either.

You know what: if you REALLY MUST have Italian, go to any of these places. But Austin is weaker in good Italian food than any large(ish) city I've been in. JJ is correct on the atmosphere of Andiamo, though. Its in a strip mall in a not so great area. I've just been dissapointed the 3-4 times I've been to Sienna. And I really tried to like it as a friend of mine is one of the managers.

Just an fyi - sienna is just about booked - earliest reservation for v-day that i could get was 9:00 other than a spot at 5:30. They are doing a 4 course meal for $65 a person.

Anybody tried Drakula, near Laff Stop on 183/Anderson Lane area?

Supposed to be really good fusion of eastern & western european.

I'm a creature of habit, so I don't try every new place in town but Siena rates well with me -- and pretty authentic for tuscan cuisine -- that's to say, Siena reminds us of the food we ate in tuscany at several spots.
