Shuttle Launch in HD

Growing up watching all the Apollo launches with the Saturn V's, watching launches of any type never gets old for me. But watching today's launch in HD for the first time was simply astounding. WOW! Plus the camera attached to the external fuel tank for the first time sent back some beautiful shots of the underbelly of the shuttle with the earth's curvature in the background. Another camera was on the deck where the astronauts enter the shuttle. The vibrations and heat were unbelievable. Simply amazing what man can do!

It's on HDNet. I looked at the schedule and didn't see a replay. However, later in the week they're going to show the launch of a gamma-ray telescope. That could be cool.

shuttle launches really are an amazing thing to watch. the camera on the external fuel tank has been there for the last 5 or 6 launches though. not a new thing.

If you ever get the chance, you should see one live. It's amazing. I was close enough that I felt a bit of the shockwave and that caused a few car alarms to go off!!

Well, at 500 million dollars per launch and virtually no useful science, the least a shuttle mission should do is be pretty.

I thought they said it was the first time for the external tank camera, must have misunderstood. I did see a shuttle launch (sort of) in person once. It was amazing. It was a night launch, in December. We were driving to the in-laws in Tampa, when I noticed a weird "shooting star" going the wrong way, low on the horizon and rising. Figured it must have been the shuttle and confirmed when we got to in-laws house. I want to see a day time launch though where everyone parks to see it. Someday. One of my "list" things.

We did DVR the launch. I am going to burn a DVD with it. Just wish I had HD in my classroom, what a great picture! Thanks for the heads up on the other stuff on HDNet this week. I will be setting the DVR. I have been so caught up in softball today, I forgot to check what they were doing on there.
