Should we give Beck credit or is it all Herman?

Hey, I for one was reeling after Saturday’s game. Defense was atrocious. But really, as I look at it, Im pretty stoked to see the improvement on offense.

Last year we were putrid on offense and are miles and miles better now.

I believe the coaches will revamp the defense in the off season and the “pendulum” nature of football will swing back towards a defense that can stop the run, i.e 4-3 or 5-2. Tom being a mensa guy will get it figured out.

(As an aside, how many yards would 1999 Ricky Williams and company run on this defense with big old Ricky Brown lead blocking for him? 250? 300?)

All that said, if Tim Beck is responsible for this offense and Sam’s development then Kudos are owed to him.

Or is Herman calling the plays now?

Either way, improvement is tangible and the defense is simply schematically flawed. They will fix the scheme problems and we will win out, or they wont and we will drop at least one more. But it wont be our offense’s fault. Well done offense coaches.

I give all the credit to Sam E. He has been tremendous. Best QB play since Colt McCoy. Let's be honest, K. Ingram is good, but we still don't have a legit running game. What Sam has done without a consistent running game is incredible. The O-Line deserves some credit, too.

The only Beck I'll credit is Andrew Beck. He almost looks like the reincarnation of David Thomas. Credit due to the coaches? Uh, no. They haven't earned their paychecks.

I can't believe that its 2018 and I am excited about our offense, and my dog has to run out of the room when our Defense takes the field.
Last year I felt our best odds to score was when the other team had the ball.

Pretty remarkable 180 on both sides of the ball.

A lot of that credit goes to Sam, but that said, if Beck is the QB coach then he deserves some credit there too. Still doesn't mean he's good coordinator though. Took him long enough to see that CJ and LJH can ball...

As for Orlando, he may not be any better than Beck at coordinator.

I think this speaks to the old saying "Its not about Xs and Os, its about your jimmies and joes".
Any coordinator can look great when they have a lot of players that can execute. The great ones can hide it when they don't.

Yeah because the QB coach hasn't been working with Sam at all. Every bit of his improvement is just letting him do whatever he wants to do, pick everything up on his own and hope for the best.

Seriously... I don't know how anyone could watch this offense right now, see the way that Sam is now running the team, making checks, directing traffic, and making good decisions, and somehow think that's not him being "coached up" - as so many on this board like to say. It's funny. We always complain "they gotta coach those kids up" when they play poorly, and when they improve we say "I won't give the coaches credit for that."

This.

Tim Beck deserves the benefit of the doubt, imo, so props to him for the offense’s improved performance.

The last point I made was that the coaches have not earned their paychecks. These guys are getting paid a sh*tload of money and they simply aren't producing the product they were hired to produce. Yes, the offense has improved but it's not where it needs to be. The defense is horrible. Special teams are average.

76 points and 922 total yards the last 2 games. The offense should be expected to do more than that to win?

No, they shouldn't. The defense and its collapse are completely to blame for what's happening to the team right now.

Go watch McCulloch on the 2-point conversion to see why Orlando is to blame for a ton of our problems. So, on the first 2-point conversion when we called the timeout, they got the immediate slant pass completed. OK, so Orlando says we'll put a LB in that route to take it away. McCulloch literally stands in the way of a potential slant route. Everyone in the stadium can see this, including Grier. So as Grier gets the snap and sees McCulloch watching for the ball release, all he has to do is gallop to his left and walk into the end zone while McCulloch ******* STANDS IN THE WAY OF A NONEXISTENT SLANT that never happens. There's no ******* way in the fiery pits of hell that he was supposed to wait for the route. He should have spied Grier once the slant didn't happen. He could tell that the slant wouldn't happen within 1 second if he was coached properly.

He collapses into the mass of bodies in case Grier would have run up the middle. Bad decision.

I think it's funny logic that people blame Beck for sucking last year ad give Sam the credit for being good this year. It's pretty obvious that this offense will suck if the QB doesn't perform. When we have a good QB it's a good offense.

I give Beck some blame for not knowing how to manufacture some offense with a shaky QB. But he sure knows what to do with a good QB.

Beck was never as bad as many here cried and yelled about. The success of this offensive unit this year goes to this right here:

1. Health of the players. By this time last year we were dealing with a patchwork Oline. You can't run a offense with no linemen.

2. Health of Sam, him and coaches have gotten much better at how they use him in the running game.

3. Blocking. This goes along with the health thing, but when you have a cohesive unit and a good line coach, blocking will improve and this has lead to better QB play and better running back production.

4. Sam growing up - I can't say enough how much Sam has matured in his play, barring any setbacks, I fully expect him to have a great Junior year in which he will be mentioned as a Heisman finalist.

5. Having Electric WRs. As Sam was improving, he was saved more than once by the electric play of our Wrs, especially LJH. That guy has been nails all year.

I've never put much stock in complaints about play calling, every play is designed to succeed, but I did complain about coaches not being smart with their play calling. I think every play should be about setting up the defense for another play, and I think we are on the right track with this.

Our coaches aren't perfect and they still make what I would dub as rookie coaching mistakes, but I like the direction of our offense.

Biggest concern moving into next season is
1. replacing 3 starting offensive linemen
2. replacing LJH and CJ
3. replacing Andrew Beck and CJ Watson

Our assets going into next year
1. A solid veteran QB
2. A solid starting RB
3. Devin Duv coming back as the focal point of the passing game along with Josh Moore. After those two it's going to be about who can step up.
