Should the staff ride along til the end?

I'm just questioning this tactic of riding along with an 18 year old until the 11th hour. Should the staff adopt a policy of not waiting until the final day? It just seems like it gives the kids too much control of the situation. Even in the cases where you win a recruit, one school always winds up looking foolish. Seems like setting some kind of internal deadline like mid January would still allow recruits plenty of time to make a decision. It could also save a school from having egg on its face come signing day.

**I would like to add that this is not an indictment of Mr. Scott. He has played by the rules we set for him and I wish him well in whatever decision he makes.

It depends on the situation. Waiting for Scott was fine. Texas already had other running backs committed and it wasn't a need position.

It would not be a good idea to wait if it was a position where they needed to definately take somebody, like QB. If Texas was only going to take one QB it would be stupid to wait until signing day.

I don't have a problem w/ it. I don't think Scott comes to UT but hey, stranger things have happened.

I wish the kid good luck either way, as you said, he's carried himself well throughout the process.

It's a case-by-case, position-by-position thing. If it's a once in a lifetime player, you wait. If you already have one/some players at the position committed, you can wait. If it's a need position, and you have a good player ready to commit, you take the one who wants you. If it's a prima donna, no matter how talented, you probably should pass.

...and by the way, Scott's apparently no prima donna...I have an idea that he's been seriously conflicted on his choice until recently...even if his choice is Colorado. Wish him well if he chooses the Buffs, love him if he chooses the good guys.

Coolhorn, I agree to a point he has certainly not been the media ***** that some recruits have been. But I would say that anyone that chooses to make his annoucement on national television is at least something of a prima donna. If he really didn't want the attention he would do like many other recruits, notifiy the coaches and recruiting services and fax in his commitment. I suppose we are to believe that truly didn't make up his mind until 11:50 central time. Sorry, I'm not buying that.

Orange, I agree with you 100%. Some, but not all of the big fish, like the limelight until the last day. The question then becomes, do we really want them that bad to risk the egg on the face situation?

I don't think this is an "egg on the face" situation. We made a late charge after JC announced he was leaving. Before that, we were barely on his radar.

It was a solid effort by Mack & Co...just too much to overcome (read family influence) in a short amount of time.

I think he's known for a while where he's going, and I didn't say he's not enjoying the attention. I just don't see him as another RP...saying he's committed to us while recruiting for another school. If Scott's happier going somewhere besides Texas, so-be-it...Wish him well against everybody but us, and know that there are some stud running backs in the next class who apparently want to play for Texas.
