Short August vacation

We (me, wife, kids ages 6,6 and 4 and my mother) are looking to take a three day, mid-week vacation sometime in the middle of August. We live in Austin, and have narrowed it down pretty much to the Great Wolf Resort in Grapevine, or Hill Country Hyatt or La Cantera in S.A. Anyone have any thoughts on the options? I probably won't get a chance to play golf, and we will probably just hang around the resort for the most part (although if we do S.A, I imagine we will hit Sea World).

We've taken the kids to La Cantera in the past and really enjoyed it, but we went to the Hyatt Hill Country over spring break this year and had a blast. Great place to take the family to get away for a few days, and you won't even have to leave the hotel if you don't feel like it.

They do the Camp Hyatt stuff for kids, but if you're not inclined to drop your kids there (we didn't) you can still enjoy some of the activities. They have movie nights and campfires and other things that you can go do with the kids.

And it's less than 5 minutes from Sea World.

I recommend Horseshoe Bay.

I had a great time at the Hyatt Hill Country. I thought the golf was better at La Cantera and Horseshoe, but the Hyatt seemed more kid-friendly.

No golfers in our family(kids are 5 and 7), we prefer Hill Country Hyatt and Lost Pines Hyatt to La Cantera. No experience with Great Wolf. Are you trying to work in an amusement park?

We took our 2 youngest (5 and 4) to Hill Country Hyatt last weekend. Although it wasn't our first trip there, it was surprisingly fun. It's definitely more refined than Hyatt Lost Pines (Bastrop).

We dumped our kids at Camp Hyatt one evening ($110 with tip) for the chance to pay $125 for dinner for two at Antlers, and won't do that again. If you're going for the family, stay with the family.

Thanks for the input. We're going to do the Hill Country Hyatt. May or may not venture to Sea World. From what many people have told us, the kids will have a blast without ever leaving the property.

We showed up at noon on a Sunday, swam all day, did the Camp Hyatt-slash-dinner thing that night, and went to SeaWorld the next day. It was a great schedule for the kids. They were wiped by the time we got back to Austin after SeaWorld.

Take money.

Well since you have the option of mid-week I will toss in an off the wall suggestion that is not resort (despite the name)but is basically the original concept for the Hyatt's lazy river float around the property. Rent a room at "the Other Place Resort" in New Braunfels and float the river, it's a short float if you want it to be and you can ride the "chute" again and again with your kids (they should all wear life vests at their age) and it's a throwback to days gone by during the weekdays. Thanks, Summer, a friend of mine had mentioned that place before. It sounds awesome--I think we are locked into the Hyatt this time around, but I definitely want to check that place out for next time.

take a minute and drive by and take a look around then try your luck in September in getting a good weekend. The blazing heat of August is perfect for that cool clear spring fed water and a frostly cold beer floating in your tube.
