Make 70% free throws and we're still undefeated. We all knew we were going to lose games because of our ineptitude at the line. Drew having his players foul Mason on purpose to put him on the line to tie the game says everything.
With Damion James not being able to hit FT's, he should not be in contention for POY awards. Dude is an absolute warrior and I am so proud of him being a Longhorn, but he (and everyone else on this squad) have shown the country that we can get beat by being fouled.
I have enjoyed so many different teams throughout my Longhorn fandom, even some of the ones that weren't all that talented but made for interesting seasons. This team rivals KD's team as being the hardest one to love. I'm not saying this team won't make an amazing run in the tourney or bust heads in the rest of conference play, it's just I have very little faith that this will be the season we all hoped it would be unless we can start making FT's.
You can't win close games when the other team can just hack-a-horn.
I can't think of another team I've followed or been a fan of who had this kind of talent and potential and was this poor at shooting FTs. Its starting to feel like the team has a collective mental block.
If the FT shooting is this bad, the team might as well play like Memphis of a couple years ago and just hit the floor Fast & Loose.
Austin talk radio (ESPN, Morning Rush, 104.9 FM) said all week that the team is playing too tight. They were better in the early part of the season playing more loose and more relaxed.
Barnes should tell them to go out and have fun and don't hold anything back and forget about wins and losses and just play lights out til the final buzzer and not sweat free throws.
That's what I would do. The team looked like they were having a whole lot more fun, by and during the North Carolina game. What happened to that attitude?
Furthermore I would stop pulling players after 2 fouls. To hell with it. Leave Dex in until he fouls out. Tell him to "get ****** with it" and go after balls when they're flying around, and for any balls he gets near the paint to take it to the rim. Tell all the players to dunk any layups, preferably with both hands. No easy layups. Slam the suckers down.
And play Champman more minutes and realized that much as we all like Wangmane, he fouls too easily.
Here are some lineups that should be left in for longer spurts...
Bradley
Brown
Hamilton
Johnson
James
Tell that group to just play balls to the wall and don't worry about a damn thing but having fun and showing some serious attitude. Ball hawk, throw up 3's, relentless defense.
Then...
Champman
Pittman
James
Mason
Balbay
Run, pass, drive and force movement that dumps the ball to the big men. Have Balbay force the play until he's so out of breath he has to come out.
Finally...
Bradley
Lucas
Brown
Hamilton
Johnson
Again, Fast & Furious. Kick out to Brown and Hamilton and tell them to keep shooting 3's.
