Sick.

So far there are 14 dead and up to 50 injured. A guy supposedly barged into an emergency exit door, stood in front of screen and let off some smoke diversion or maybe CS. Then opened fire with rifle and handgun. He is in custody, his apartment is being searched and a few blocks around it have been evacuated hopefully just as a precaution.

Sick bastard.

Denver Post article as of 4.18 MDT

I am sure things have changed by the time y'all wake up and as the day goes on. Thoughts and respects to all a part of this.

Senseless. I hope the wounded pull through. Looks like some critically wounded. Numbers revised already. In the rush to get news out, I'm sure facts will change over the next few days.

I'm just overwhelmed by the evil that lurks in the hearts of men.

My humble heart goes out to everyone. They are in my thoughts and prayers..

Unbelievable. I don't know what goes through people's heads. More and more I think there are certainly people that are not living in the real world. I'm starting to think that this guy probably went through this plan in his head and thought "hey, I'll walk in, do it, and walk out - just like in the movies!"

I agree Third Coast. What is going on in young kid's heads to perpetrate such senseless violence on innnocent people. What does it prove? I don't understand kids today. Crazy stuff going on around the Denver area with Columbine and now this.

Prayers to the victims and injured's families.

2 takes:

ONe, there are lots of deranged people out there and it is real easy to get your hands on weaponry and the "entertainment" we roll around in is full of meaningless violence for its own sake. It is entertaining to watch people blow each other away in this society.

TWO: if the kids in the theater had been armed themselves, they could have killed the shooter themselves; casualties would be a dozen or less, tops.

This type event will end when this society becomes more civilized, but that will only happen when the society develops some tools to suppress the urges of the deranged and that will involve suppressing a lot of things we like.

I have coffee every morning with about 7-10 very civilized guys/gals and we polled ourselves on guns the other day. We had from 3 to 40 guns at our houses. None of us has or would abuse them but we all were brought up by families very dissimilar from what is the norm now.

I've got an acquaintance with a crazy wife and five nutty kids and one of his leisure activities is raising pit bulls. ONe of them almost chewed his mom's face off a couple of years back. Instead of killing all of them (the dogs, that is) he gave the biter away. He aint civilized and neither are his kids.

I went to see a film the other night and the previews were full of exciting stuff about people in exteme situations blasting others, androids I think, to pieces at a smart clip. Kids who grow up watching this very well made junk who are not well tethered to reality end up gunning down their fellow patrons on occasion.

It is a small price to pay, I guess, for my right to own a dozen weapons for hunting, self protection and just curiousity.

In this case, we aren't going to do anything about limiting access to weapons, we aren't going to lock up all the deranged kids, so what is left?

Perhaps there will be some lawsuits and the theaters will be run out of business (which is going to happen in a few years by market forces anyway) because they don't have weapon detectors and armed guards on hand.

Maybe we could just change the name of the country to TSA from USA?

One of the victims was almost caught in a random attempt at mass murder in Canada just a few weeks ago. Se was a San Antonio transplant. Dead.

Arming everybody is probably not the answer in the long run. I mean, if a person wants to cause mayhem and he expects a fair number of potential victims to be armed, he can change the smoke bombs in this case to stun grenades or just go the McVeigh route and blow people up in a remote fashion. Arming everyone just escalates the problem, which is human beings as a whole are going to produce fairly significant numbers of individuals who think violence is an appropriate or effective way to express their feelings, beliefs, displeasures, etc., and there are going to be a number in any population that are sick ann/or venal. Sprinkling the population with guns just increases the liklihood that those people will be more efficient than the guy in LA that is operating on the homeless with a knife.

I'm sick of sick m'fers taking out their anger and "a life of pain" on innocent people. Too bad the sonofabitch didn't off himself or put up a fight w/ the cops.

As far as "kids" having the right to bear arms, horrible idea. I'm not NRA, have rifles and shotguns, done my share of hunting, but allowing immature and hot-tempered "kids" to carry would only create more of these horrific acts (Columbine, VT, any public street). Too many of them get pissed over the smallest perceived slight; I can imagine how they'd react if armed. There would be more shootings in anger than in defensive protection.

BTW, does CO have the death penalty? Instances like this call for it instead of a lifetime in a pound-you-in-the-*** prison.

I was waiting to see how long it would take for someone to claim that a theatre full of gun toters who all pulled out their weapons and started blazing away would be a safer environment.
The perp's mother was quoted as saying, "they got the right guy," when informed about the shootings. She apparently knew he had problems. Could he have a known mental illness, like bipolar or something? I'm sure it will come out in all the coverage.
Scary situation, to say the least. Some of the young people there helped shield and rescue mothers with children, real heroes.

At the risk of going all West Mall, we're having way too many instances where people like this perpetrate acts, and then people say "yeah this guy was a powder keg". The issue in Fort Hood should have been prevented, could have been prevented. We may end up seeing that this person as well showed all the signs, and no one did anything.

We've got to quit accepting that weird, violent and disturbed kids will just grow out of it while we let them play shooter games, watch violent movies and stoke every bad impulse we're trying to temper.

Increased negative stimulus plus decreased parental control = trouble. This is not a difficult issue.

I don't believe violent movies and video games play a significant role, unless there are other existing underlying problems, such as parents not emphasizing love, respect and teaching a child right from wrong.

My son watched/played them, as did many of his friends and they never went postal, or exhibited any violent tendencies whatsoever. As a matter of fact, they were the nicest kids with the biggest hearts that one would ever hope to know.

I do take issue with someone taking their 4 month old and 4 year old children to a midnight showing though.

Saying that violent movies and violent video games don't play a role when a guy goes on a shooting spree apparently dressed as a character from the last Batman movie is somewhat ironic.

Gun control is great, but when a guy has a clean record and can legally acquire semi automatic rifles, ballistic vests, masks, leg protectors, and riot gear in an attempt to play Call of Duty in real life, clearly gun control is a failed experiment. The people that want guns when they're illegal still get them, the people that want guns legally and use them illegally end up doing things like today. There are too many people in this country and it's too easy to slip through the cracks so that nobody knows a lone gunman is going crazy and the amount of damage that one person can inflict with this kind of armament is insane. You take away their guns and they'll switch to homemade bombs.

I'm not a gun expert, but whenever something like this happens, all the concealed carry people say they could've prevented it. My question is this, if somebody is wearing full body ballistic armor/gas mask armed with an assault rifle in a room full of tear gas is being shot at by a guy wearing a pistol and no armor, how well are they going to prevent it? Will small arms fire penetrate the kind of armor he was wearing?

Frankly, I think the one thing we could do right away would be to outlaw news coverage of shooting sprees. At the very least, outlaw naming the perps or showing their picture. Ensure the shooters remain anonymous to keep ******** from trying to get famous.

Looks the like only thing that the Joker brought was a new pair of kicks.

Meanwhile, I'm going to get a gun and start carrying. The world needs heroes. If I am in a diner or theater or class room or concert and some jag off pulls a gun won't HE be surprised. Down he goes. If someone else thinking along my lines pulls their rod, as well, they go down, too. You can never be too sure. Then I get an agent and a deal for book and movie rights. That's why this is on the Cafe rather than the Mall.

To be honest, as horrific as this may sound, i think this was intended to be much worse than it was. the media has been going on and on about his apartment being booby trapped but fails to put what appears to be a couple rather obvious facts together. I don't think apartment wasn't intended to kill the police when they came searching for answers after the fact but to serve as a diversion to allow him more time to continue his shooting rampage.

the techno began blaring at 11pm and played until midnight, playing the same thing over and over according to reports. a neighbor actually went up to his apartment to beat on his door to have him turn it down and found the door slightly opened and considered opening it. Luckily for her, she didnt. Even if the police had been called out they would have opened the door. Doing so would have triggered an explosion that would have likely caused a mass casualty situation that would have pulled both police and ems to the apartment anywhere between 11pm and midnight. That would have pulled the first responders to the apartment where they would have been faced with a mass casualty event.

the movie began at midnight and it's been reported that he was sitting in the front row at he start of the movie. as premeditated as this attack was, he would have wanted to make sure he was close enough to the front which means he would have needed to likely be near the front of the line to get in. So when the **** hit's the fan at the apartment, he's either already at the theater or inside knowing the first responders now suddenly have a **** storm to deal with and wont be able to respond as quickly as they normally could/would have. this would have given him more time to literally hunt for more victims and likely would have been able to extend his assault beyond theater 9.

My heart goes out to the victims and the community as a whole. Regardless of what his intentions were, what he did alone is truly heart wrenching.
