Shipping Wine

I found some wines that I want to have shipped to me in DC from California. Anyone know if having wine shipped cross country via ground 5 day would alter or spoil the wine? Another option is FedEx 3 day for additional $20. The wine people suggested FedEx 3 day because the variation in temperature from CA to DC via 5 day ground would not be good for the wine. I tend to agree but I've never had wine shipped to me, plus, aren't they shipped via ground from vineyard to distributor via ground or ship?

I only ship from CA to Austin, so I don't have the long delay. However, if I were shipping some $30/bottle wine, the additional $2/bottle shipping would just be cheap insurance against the wine getting messed up during shipment.

I have wine shipped regularly from California to Texas, and ended up getting the expensive shipping because the corks weren't coming out without falling apart first. The company suggested it was the heat. Either way, the wine tasted fine, but I'm a philistine and drink Coors Light, too.
