Sherman's Decision 2008: McGee or Johnson?

Stephen McGee is a tough Senior quarterback who has shown leadership on and off the field.

Look no further than his unyielding support of Franchione last year when Fran was all but assured of getting the boot. As for on the field, I don't ever recall the guy mailing it in.

Johnson on the other hand, has NFL prototype size and could be the calling card for Sherman and his new regime.

Out with the old and in with the new? Should the new coach start a Sophomore in a new offense, or should Sherman rely on a veteran leader who paid his dues and stood by a coach that everyone had written off?

Here's to an aggy QB controversy

A number of factors and intangibles will go into the decision. I think Sherman's choice will come down to who he believes can pass more consistently, while moving the chains. Although a good passer in HS, McGee has been more of running threat in the option attack in the past and inconsistent in his passing. Some of the inconsistency could be a result of the offense not being geared to pass much and the difficulty a running team has passing late in the game when trailing. If McGee shows he can pass well, the job may be his. On the other hand Sherman may believe Johnson is the future... his athleticism and big play ability overcoming McGee's experience, leadership, etc.

I suspect it will be Johnson, but I could be wrong....

What kind of offense did Johnson run at Humble? According to A&M's site, he passed for a total of 1925 yards during his Jr. and Sr. seasons. Unless he has a revelation in College Station, I expect to see him at WR or TE.

My personal opinions:

Every player on the A&M team says McGee is their starter and leader; there is absolutely no question in College Station.

JJ will get as much playing time as possible to prepare him for next year.

There are other good young quaeterbacks on campus that may also see action.

This is the deepest most experienced talented team A&M has had at every position this decade.

At the same time A&M will miss the Byrne created major distraction 14 decommits, that included 4 and 5 star players at most defensive positions. They were expected to red shirt, but the loss of 3 linebackers, 2 four star and a three star all with 4.5 speed; and 4 defensive backs, a five star, 2 four stars and a three star all with 4.5/sub 4.5 speed were A&M's future.

My personal opinions:

And remember, Byrne's Sherman as the 8th ranked coach in the Big 12, and the 46th ranked coach in the BCS out of 66, is just the coach to waste that talent?

aggy will boycott themselves if McGee loses his job. Aggy loves this guy, especially the way he comes up talking **** after getting drilled into the grass. replacing him is "bad bull" regardless of how much he sucks.

McGee will get the starting nod, and in keeping with tradition and the highest standards of aggydom, he will be unceremoniously thrown under the bus sometime before the season ends.

i don't know your sources, sips, but every ag i know wants JJ to start. they like mcgee's toughness, but think he sucks. more excitement when JJ comes in the game and they feel more confident.

I would guess that Sherman really prefers Johnson because McGee's strengths do not really align with the kind of offense Sherman wants to run. But I think he will do the practical thing and stick with McGee until McGee proves he can't hack it running OR throwing without a serviceable offensive line in front of him. Then Johnson will take over, just gradually enough to make people believe it was a decision that played itself out on the field and not one that was made in June. If Sherman is smart, he knows that Aggie fans want to believe they call the shots.

Another thing that leads me to believe Sherman will start off with McGee is the drama with moving Jorvorskie Lane to fullback. He certainly cannot afford for his players to start circling the wagons. If he were to take the offense's two biggest "stars" and remove them from their usual duties, I don't think the rest of the team would react as well as he might like.

Seems silly to think you'd ditch your three year starting QB without gametime evidence that he can't hack it. But then aggy has always been the epitome of silly.

Oh, he will definitely wait until there is gametime evidence that McGee can't handle things. The last thing he wants to do is pull the trigger on a three-year starter without proper founding. If he started Johnson in the first game, and the Aggies lost (or even struggled), there would be hell to pay, and that's the last thing he needs after the recruiting year he's having.

Their situation is strangely analogous to ours, IMO. Veteran QB who has shown himself to be a better runner than passer in crunch time. Both lost their favorite receiving targets in the offseason.

In the wings: young, very athletic & highly rated QBs who are also considered strong runners, but unproven passers.

I think, as Bassale said, the A&M conundrum will come down to which guy is better suited to Sherman's offense. My guess: McGee starts the first two games, proves ineffective and Johnson wins the starting nod vs. Miami.

-JJ shows massive potential but he needs massive seasoning.
-He has accuracy issues
-Not suited for Shermans offense; if he was in the WVa offense he would be a stud
-While McGee has limitations he can do things that JJ cant: ie get balls in the flats and he is a winner
-I think we are going to learn this year that either Fran ruined McGee or McGee ruined Fran
- The future of this offense probably lies with Ryan Tannehill or Cody Green

McGee will start. He is the definition of an average NCAA QB, but he ran Fran's ******** offense fairly well. He only loses the job if we hit 500 or worse during the season.
