Shepard Quote

According to Shepard, his father and his coach, Shepard's recruitment by Mack Brown's Longhorns ended with Texas' stated intention to recruit him as an athlete and not a quarterback.

"He was very disappointed with Texas," Shepard's father said. "As a kid, all he wanted to be was a Longhorn."

My head hurts

Let them compete. Mack appears to want to avoid the Major and Simms controversy, atleast to me. I like competition Mack better.

No doubt Russell is going to be a great player as well, but Mack and the staff have to make difficult decisions and you do not lose when you take the commitment from Gilbert. At least Mack is honest with the players and that is one of the reasons why players do commit early to the horns and Mack.
As far as the competition goes, there will always be competition for the qb position at Texas. But if you can go to LSU and play earlier, why not do it. I think that Mack knows as well as anyone here that Shepard is a good, possibly great player and will have A LOT of success. But he also knows he has the necessary piece in Gilbert to do the same thing here. We cannot get EVERY great player, and sometimes having BOTH of the best quarterbacks here at the same time is not the best thing for either or the program.
I think the timing of Gilbert coming in, taking a red shirt to watch and improve behind Colt is the BEST thing for this program for the next four years.

Gilbert seems to be a generational quarterback, whereas Shepard seems to be the best athlete in the state playing QB. He is a much bigger risk than Gilbert, and I feel that the gap between them has widened with Gilbert way ahead right now.

So we recruited Chiles and promised him a shot a qb and wouldn't do the same for Shepard? Gad zooks ,is he (Shepard) that much of a longshot at qb.I'm just sayin

. We have not had much luck in recruiting qb's named Shepard anyhow

You say let them compete....But what if Gilbert beats RS and instead of dong what Chiles has done, stick around and continue to learn and compete, he decides to transfer? That would be a waste. I'll trust Mack and Co., as usual, with what they do regarding our scholarships.

If you've watched any of the LSU game tonight, I think he will have plenty of competition there. Their freshman quarterback has looked really good tonight.

Maybe Mack promised GG that he wouldn't take anyone else as a QB next year. I would rather lose RS to lsu than to lose GG to the ags or okies.

I hate that he won't be Horn, his dream team.
I think he'll wind up behind Jefferson at LSU for quite a while.

IMO, he needs to keep shopping for that school that will give him his QB chance. His ultimate goal has to be the NFL. Smaller colleges have provided that opportunity.

Has there ever been (or any time in the last 15 yrs or so) a kid who committed to Texas and then stated publicly that he always wanted to play for another school and was disappointed that it didn't happen?

There have been so many cases where the reverse has happened - and in most cases they have stated it after going to some proud programs like OU, LSU etc. Pretty amazing.

I'm of the opinion you can never have too many QB's. Having said that, you have to pick your spots. And with Gilbert coming in, this is probably not the spot to use a scholarship on a 2nd QB.

The risk Mack's running is that if something happens to GG in his RS Fr year, then it's going to be slim pickings behind him.

AP wanted to be a Longhorn all his life but he decided his senior year to go to OU where he would have a better chance to be on an NC team and later praised OU's weight training. But what happened was --------------.

If I recall correctly, AP said he went to OU because he wanted to 'play' for national titles. He was correct. At OU he played for the national championship in 2004. Of course had AP wanted to 'win' a national title he would've gone to Texas.

I have seen Shepard play 7 times.... those of you who think he is going to be anything but an all confrence type QB are going to be dissapointed. Sadly he is going to play for the biggest fraud in college football.

"As I told Mack, 'You haven't won a conference championship, let alone a national championship, without a kid like that playing quarterback, or without getting completely ****** by your own conference.' He agreed that is is highly unlikely that my son will ever be as good as Colt McCoy."

That is how that conversation should've taken place.

Some of you guys need to sharpen your reading comprehension skills. That quote was from his coach, not his father.

I seem to recall Texas offering Reggie McNeal or telling him he was a WR, Vince a QB. aggy had it the other way around. McNeal went to the NFL and then CFL as what? A WR. I think I trust our coaches.

Good luck in the bayou, RS. I wonder what he thought about how well the Freshman qb for the Tigers did. I guess like Perriloux he will go in and take over day one.
