I realize alot of people really like this movie, but would you say this is the best movie you've seen? Is it better than anything Spielberg has done? Scorcese? Tarantino?

I don't understand why Frank Darabont (the writer/director) doesn't get the studio support to make more movies.

Best movie I've seen? no. Better than anything Spielberg has done? Yes. Tarantino and Scorcese? Probably not.

It's a solid film, no doubt. But it's not top 10. It's no Lebowski.

Speilberg movies better than Shashank
Schindler's List
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Jaws
Saving Private Ryan
E.T.
Raiders of the Lost Ark

Tarantino movies better than Shawshank
Pulp Fiction
also Tarantino sucks

Scorsese movies better than Shawshank
Raging Bull
Goodfellas
Taxi Driver
The Departed

I've seen "The Shawshank Redemption" several times and iI enjoy it, but it's not one of my favorites.

"Cool Hand Luke" firmly has the place in my favorites list that "Shawshank" might occupy, if I liked it as much.

But I don't.

Very good movie though.

I think it approaches "Cool Hand Luke" in watchability and cinematic value, but IMHO it doesn't get there and was made with its own, different goals in mind.

A movie I've seen, which is fairly unknown, really enjoyable and that I rate very highly is "The Painted Veil."

The Link

I think it deserves mention with such good movies as "The Shawshamk Redemption" and "Cool Hand Luke," although it is not like either of them.

Not trying to hijack this worthy thread but has anyone even seen it?

Maybe, it's just me who thinks so highly of this movie, but it strikes me as a largely unseen film that those who appreciate good movies would enjoy.

Anyway, a repeat, initial or even partial viewing of any of these fine movies is, I think, time well spent.

I reviewed "The Painted Veil" on Hornfans and here:

Definitely one of the best all time. Number of Tarantino movies better? Zero. Number of Scorcese or Spielberg movies on par with Shawshank? Maybe 2 or 3.

Shawshank is on the list of movies that I can watch over and over again. Here are some others in no particular order:

Shawshank Redemption
Lawrence of Arabia
Casablanca
The Usual Suspect
Hoosiers
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Good Will Hunting
The Quiet Man
Dead Poet's Society
Top Gun
Moulin Rouge
Gladiator
The Road Warrior
The Hunt for Red October
Point Break
Matrix
Godfather I & II
Vacation
Dumb and Dumber

Easily top 10 for me...possibly top 5.

As well as having the best ending ever, it was also the most satisfying ending.

I hope.

I think I disagree, Stockdale. I have asked this question before. The song, I don't think, was picked by accident. As creative as King is, and as well done as this movie was done, I am curious as to the song and the context of when it was sung in the opera itself. It would surprise me very much if there was no contextual meaning to the specific song chosen for that scene.

Hayden:

You are correct, but SK was involved in the movie production. That is why I said there had to be a reason it was chosen for the scene. I meant the movie scene. My bad.
