Shameless lame plug for the Austin Humane Society

Some of you remember me as a crazy dog lady. What you might not know is I'm a very involved volunteer trainer at the Austin Humane Society. Right now we're campaigning to get the word out about a shelter makeover contest we are involved in, that if we win will earn us $1 million toward renovating the current Austin Humane Society.
The contest is hosted by zootoo.com, which is basically an online community for all things animal. The way you move up in this contest is by gathering lots of community supporters to do things on the website which earns points for the shelter. We are up against some very large shelters with thousands of supporters, but over the past few weeks our very dedicated volunteers have thrown AHS from 49th place up to 5th. To be selected as a semifinalist we must remain in the top 20 then impress the zootoo big wigs when they come visit our shelter and look at our support.

Zootoo is a free website and you will not receive any spam from it. I'm hoping there will be at least a few dog (and cat?) lovers on here who will click my referral link and register. Just by registering the shelter will receive much needed points. It takes very little time. Just remember to affiliate yourself with the Austin Humane Society. When you register, enter 78758 for the zip code to find it easier. If you choose the wrong shelter it is a pain to change it.

That's all I got.

Feel free to forward or crosspost to anyone you think might be interested in helping.

Maybe the HS should think about treating their volunteers better. I have fostered about 150 kittens, but when I complained about the way a friend of mine (a huge animal lover) was treated when she was trying to adopt two kittens, I was told I was not allowed to foster any more. I had left the Humane Society at least $100,000 in my will, but that's been changed now. It's going to the UT pre-vet program.

I have been a prevalent volunteer for the past 4 years, and I know many who have been there in excess of 10 years. One of the best things about the Austin SPCA is their volunteer program and the relationship between the volunteers and staff. I don't know what happened in your situation but I'm pretty sure it's an exception.

Well thanks to you for shitting all over a post about a charitable opportunity.

Again, what you say does not match up to what the common experience is. Maybe you got a rude staff member... I don't know. What I do know is it's not difficult in the least to go look at 'caged dogs'- the door is wide open.

Thanks. I signed up. Good luck.

I've visited the AHS a few times and an annual contributor. We almost adopted a pair of boston terriers from the shelter a few years back but those 2 and our 2 didn't get along so we ended up adopting from a local rescue group. In any event it was a good experience and thanks for your volunteer work there.

I, for one, remember you as a crazy dog lady. J/K. I signed up--I'll pass the word along.

I had a friend, a school teacher, who wanted to adopt. They asked him if the dog would stay indoors all day. He said he had a nice big grassy fenced backyard the dog could play in, but that if it were cold or hot or rainy, he would leave the dog inside. They wouldn't let him have a dog. They thought it should be inside every day, and even hinting you would leave it outside, even on a nice day, disqualified you as a dog adopter. So they eventually killed that dog, instead of letting it go to a perfect home. Is that still current policy?

i believe it still is current policy. There are some wacky people over there.

When I wient to adopt a little cocker spaniel they asked crazy questions, nonsense type stuff. I finally had to get my dad to go over there and get it. You would have thought I was trying to adopt a baby.

That being said, I signed up too. Maybe we can use the cool mil for a new staff with relevant questions.

me: Hi, i'd like to adopt that little cocker spaniel.
whacko girl purple hair: fill out this 65 page form and then we'll review.
me: really? ok.
scribble scribble scrabble
me: here ya go.
whacko girl green hair and hairy arm pits: so your single and live alone?
me: yes, but i do have a daughter that swings by now and then. she turns 5 in a couple of weeks.
whacko with a big rod thru her lip: ooooh we cant let a pet be adopted into a hope with a child under 5.
me: your stupid.

and it began.

In the Humane Society's defense, it is a no-kill shelter, so I think you are talking about the Town Lake Animal Shelter, which does give the animals only so many days to be adopted.

Have not checked in in a few days.

Austin Humane Society is the shelter up near 183/I 35. It is a no kill facility in that dogs who pass a standard temperament test will not be euthanized. Many of our dogs come from TLAC where their time has run out. We have dogs who are with us for several months, recently some up to a year, until their right home comes along. The age restrictions, as well as other restrictions, are placed based on temp test results or previous owners' accounts of the dog's behavior.

I wanted to thank you guys who signed up. The points really pile up with new registrations.

We were mentioned in a blog on austin360.com, and yesterday News 8 came by and did an interview about the contest. I was there but I don't think they got me on camera.

(By the way, the points earning portion of the contest is going on for another few weeks if anyone else wants to sign up)
