That would not surprise me one bit. In fact, twenty years later in the 10's I would not be surprised to find them in the top 5 or 10 and rightly so. I make digs but in fun and out of respect. They are a major influence to many bands and their place in music history and lore is justly deserved.
I just find it funny when people defend a rock band like they do religion or politics. And while this thread was not really all that bad I saw signs of it. It's all preference and I sometimes have to remind myself that just because I don't like something (Lady GaGa for example) it doesn't mean it sucks. To somebody it is the end all, be all and they think my stuff sucks (which it may).
digital, do you by chance recall who was top selling? I am going to guess it was U2 but somebody like Madonna or Michael Jackson would not surprise me either.
edit: Never mind, I looked it up. It was Mariah Carey. The Beatles, according to the lists I saw were not on the lists. It does not take away their importance and they surely sold more than any other band or artist from their generation or a couple after. Mariah Carey, omg.
Having some fun! I know when the discussion turns to music and you tell a friend you can't stand artist X, watch out for the response! LOL
I've been a long time fan and I think it was based on CD sales like the re-issues and Beatles 1. MC, not surprised. Fun to go over those lists and wonder about these things. I think CCR never rose up all that high on most pop charts in their time but they are well remembered and loved.
I actually like Abbey Road and the White Album better, in terms of music. My favorites off of Pepper are "She's Leaving Home" and "A Day In The Life," but the rest of the album is really short and a tad too trippy.
I could listen to the 19 minute medleys from side 2 of Abbey Road much longer than I could tolerate Sgt. Pepper.
Both Abbey Road and the White album are great albums. Although I think Pepper is more inovative, you will not get an argument from me. I did think the White album was a little unorganized, an excellent album nonetheless. And Ringo said side 2 of Abbey Road was the best music the Beatles ever played.
Hey Beatles fans, KOOP Radio in Austin does a one hour show all Beatles or all about Beatles every Tuesday at noon. You can tune in online and listen in if you are not in the area and surely download, listen or podcast it at a later time. I thought some of you may enjoy it and hopefully you do.
Off the Beatle Path takes you onto the musical roads less-traveled by former Beatles and Beatle-inspired artists of every kind. Lifelong record collector and music journalist Rush Evans digs deep into the world of the Beatles (and his own massive collection of Beatle-related rarities), which reaches far beyond that group’s own output in the sixties. Every week, listen to rare tracks from the solo work of each of the former Beatles, along with a diverse array of artists from every genre covering Beatles songs. Other Beatle-related rarities will surface, including records from the Apple label and music inspired directly by the Beatles. A splendid time. Guaranteed.
Thanks, loop! Sinatra was a fan of 'Something' on Abbey Road.
I understand the White Album was the first signs of having creative differences. Paul's songs are very pop and you can hear George beginning to push to have his songs heard more on their albums. Still, in documentaries, you can hear how Yoko brought her influence to John and his decisions.
loop - I liken the Beatles to cilantro, either you love it or you really don't want to see it in your salsa!
as time goes on, it gets harder & harder for people to appreciate how revolutionary "pepper" was. listen to other rock music from 1966, up until "pepper" came out & you get an idea of how "night & day" it was.
it's like "citizen kane." most people under the age of 50 don't care too much for it, but it's considered by many to be the greatest movie of all time because of it's innovative cinematography & music.
What I need to do is sometime get some beer and snacks and listen to the Beatles with somebody who knows them, loves them. That way it makes better sense. All I really know is what they play on radio and I know that is not where it's at. I have heard a couple songs here and there that blew me away but I did not know what they were, what album or anything about the songs. And looking at a Beatles section in the store is daunting.
How about you guys give me a primer.
A buddy did this with me for the Kinks and I have to say I am much, MUCH more appreciative of them and their catalog. Wow were they good.
